Good Morning all,
I am hoping there is a mechanically minded person who can help my daughter who has gone through some tough times lately. She owns a 2001 toyota celica GT has less than 60,000 miles on the motor but was in a car accident a couple of months ago with a person that didn't have insurance. She could only barely afford liability and this has left her without the usage of her own vehicle. Most damage was done to the front end but the car does run but it is to far above her means to fix this car. She works at a gas station and a gentleman that she knows gave her a 2000 celica GT that has a problem with the motor. My question for her,is it possible to swap out the motor from her original car to this other car although it is a year older. We are praying this is possible as I don't have the finances or means of helping her. If anyone has an idea or could answer this question it would be most greatly appreciated. Thank you
 
What is wrong with the old motor? Swapping motors can be done, but if you don't have the skills to do it yourself it's messy and expensive. If at all possible I'd fix the motor. Maybe you can use the wrecked car for parts. Make sure both vehicles came with the same motor.

Some states don't like an older motor going into a vehicle, but I doubt they would know if there was an older motor in it or not.

I'd say your best bet would come from a Toyota Forum. With many vehicles this is possible. It all depends on what the differences are between the 2 years.

i am familar with the 1.8 liter in the celica it can be done as long as they are both manual or automatic transmission, But having done this my self, that car is a jigsaw puzzle the whole front end has to come off to remove the engine, and the engine has to be dropped out of the bottom, this is very complex if you dont have the right skills. And make sure both cars are gt if one is a gts computer has to go to. The gts has vvtl-i witch is different then the standard vvtl.
 
Thank you all for your input. It sounds like there's a possibiity but a lot of work and money. Maybe she'd be better off selling her car for parts and useing that money to fix the original motor that's in this car. What a headache and more decisions. Guess we'll see what's possible for her. Thank you again
 
So long as this is not the Celica GT-S, the MR2 has the same motor as the Celica GT, though it is very slightly tweaked.. So, the engine is a 1ZZ-FE though I'm not that mechanically inclined to help you. I do routine maintenance on my MR2, (brakes, oil, radiator, etc) but not much more...

It seems most of the Toyota forums, like yotatech and 4x4wire, are specifically for trucks and SUV's. You could try this section of the Toyotafans.net forum, its for Celicas:

You may find some answers, but the forum seems a bit dead.. the one for trucks sure is. Not much activity at all.

Its not Toyota specific, but there a lot of knowledgeable folks that hang out there.

Looks like you could: sell the original car for parts, and fix whatever is wrong with the motor in the other one (we don't have enough information here to know if it can be fixed or if it needs a new engine). Or, pay someone to do the engine swap if both are compatible (perhaps a vocational school or someone you know who works on cars in their spare time can do this for a lower amount than a shop), or, if the bodies are compatible and the frame is not bent on the first car, you could swap the front ends.
