I live about 25 miles north of Columbia MO, local dealer coming on Thursday to quote putting a flue in. Same dealer recommends the Quad 4300 for our ~2000 sq/ft earth contact home. I've been looking around here for over a year (finally getting the stove put in) and realize the general rule is to go with a bigger stove and make smaller fires if needed. There is however a fairly large price difference between this stove and the next bigger size in the Quad line, the 5700. I could go with a different brand, but the wife and I got a very good first impression with the local dealer and would like to do business with them if possible. The question I have, surely to no surprise, is do you guys feel this stove will perform as a primary heat source in our situation.

According to the sales literature, for what it's worth, the 4300 in this part of the country as being able to heat up to 2250 sq/ft. I'd be curious as to some of the members stove ratings versus home size and weather it keeps it as warm as they want.

As I mentioned before, I've been looking around here for over a year now and wanted to let you guys, and gals, know that this is wonderful place to come for anything hearth related. Thanks for contributing and making the knowledge needed to make informed decisions available to anyone how wants to learn.

Hi crichison we have that stove heating our 3k house 24/7 I wanted the 5700 but it was the wife's decision. Because we have unlimited wood we make do by burning WOT 90% of the time and benefit from the stove being in the center of the house. I'm thinking you'll be alright with the 4300.

Thanks savageactor7, I noticed you had this stove so I read through most of you posts the other evening, thanks again for the info.

Hello Chrichison,

We use the next size smaller stove, the QF 3000 (same basic stove as the 3100) as the primary heat source in a 1,500 sq ft. home. We don't see quite the same lows that you might see (single digits is real cold for us), but it does ok at those temps. Our place is pretty well insulated; we keep it a relatively constant 74 deg. during the day and throttle back a little overnight to about 66 deg. We do not run it wide open for more than about 30 minutes a day. That said, if I were putting another stove in, I would most likely go one size up, if for no other reason than to be able to load more wood in for longer burns, overnight.

If your house is reasonably well insulated, the 4300 should do fine. If cash is not too tight, you might find that you like the larger firebox a little better.

Good luck!
