Yesterday I replaced a VC Resolute Acclaim with a Quadrafire Isle Royal. I seems odd that the Isle Royale operating instructions do not mention using a stove-top thermometer.
With the Resolute Acclaim, I am used to keeping the damper open until temperatures reach a certain threshold, then closing the damper to put the stove into secondary burn mode. With the Isle Royale, it seems the baffle with the burn tubes is only raised to top load wood. Do you have any recommendations on the usefulness of monitoring griddle temperatures on the Isle Royale?

I run wide open until my stove top temp is 500+, at that point I will reduce the primary air to about 1/2" from full close. This really jump starts the secondary burn, and usually the stove will level out at about 600F.

Note: Do Not run past 650F before adjusting the primary. You will get real excited when the thermo needle starts to act like the tachometer of a Formula 1 car shifting from first to second gear.

What he said, especially on dialing down before 650. It will shoot up when you dial down. I like to dial down
in two or three stages. By the last dial down, it's starting to level off instead of shooting up.

You'll also have to play around with where you place the thermometer. I put mine just to the left of center on the griddle
towards the front. If you use in an infra-red thermometer on the griddle, there are some pretty big temperature variations
depending on where you take the temperature on the griddle. So where you put it does make a difference. On mine,
the back and sides of the griddle can be almost 100 degrees cooler than the front or the center.

The top door is really thin, so I tend to set my thermo behind or in front of it. ditto on the temps these guy referenced, though. My thermo is actually hitting 550 right now and I'm about to go close down the primary.

Thanks for the great information.

Is the by-pass door (the baffle with manifold tubes) in the closed position when you say "run wide open until my stove top temp is 500+, at that point I will reduce the primary air to about 1/2” from full close" ?

In other words, is the only time the stove is operated with the by-pass door open when one is top loading wood ?

Yes, on the second question.

I don't open the bypass on mine at all. I believe when Jags said "run wide open", he meant with the primary air control full open and the bypass closed.

I'll leave the bypass closed unless I am top loading wood.

I have previous experience with Vermont Castings models: Acclaim, Resolute Acclaim, and Encore. For all those, I was used to having the damper open until the stove was up to temperature to support secondary burn. I have to break my habit of thinking of the Isle Royale bypass control to be like the damper on the VCs.
