In The Woods
Started to cut some of the Beech and Hard Maple. Had some ice on the logs and dulled the chain, had to file the chain twice.

Good job so far.
What's the hold up? :)
I cut some, then split & stack some. One tank of gas, time to take a break from the saw & work some other muscles.
Less trip hazards & gives your ears a break.
Unless you're going to rent a splitter that is.

Like the man at the shooting range used to say, "protect your eyes and your ears". This is good advice on the cutting range as well.

I would take the short bar and put on the 390 and haul some @ss

Oh yeah, that 390 with an 18" full chisel and razor sharp. It will make quick work out of that pile.

If a 16" will cut through in one swipe - go for it. I personally like the balance of an 18".

Stopping Tuesday at the local Stihl dealer (Woodchop Shop) and pick up some new chains and a new file.

That 390 with an 18" bar makes for a real nice all around firewooder.

18 would be perfect but 16in. would be pretty close

It's a start. Now go back and finish it.

I never heard of ice dulling a chain. I mean, they use chainsaws to sculpt ice. Maybe you had dirt in the ice. Maybe you need a better chain. I can buck up 6 cord on just one sharpening of my Stihl RS chain.

I don't know about cutting ice but cutting frozen wood always seems like a lot more work to me. I usually touch up my chain with each tank of gas when I'm cutting frozen wood.

I'm no chain or metallurgist expert, but I found the "Oregon" chains to last a long time.
May be a good test to get a good Oregon chain & make a comparison for us.
You have the perfect conditions there for a good test.
http://www.oregonchain.com/pdf/chain/72VFB-90.pdf
Have fun but tell everybody how hard you're working.
We all want to dive into a pile of logs like you have & make some sawdust :)

Before I moved here I always bought Oregon but now I'd rather fight than switch from using Stihl.

I dont' like using the term "sawdust" cuz there ain't no dust coming from my saw.

Another bunch of those terms I (a rookie) need to learn the difference in.
Sawdust, wood chips, noodles.
Maybe you're right, sthil chains are better. (both probably foreign made anyway )
Be nice to see a non-biased real world test, but not possible when lobbyist, corporations, brand loyalist & humans are involved.

Ford is better than chevy ;-P
Apple better than PC ;-P
remington better than winchester ;-P
Calaway better than Nike ;-P
Sony better than Samsung ;-P
Huskee better than troy built ;-P

LOL

It's good that you used that smiley so I knows you're joking.

I read a sign on the back of a Ford pickup the other week. Went something like this:
I dream of owning a Dodge,
I can't afford a Chevy,
so I drive this Ford!

Yes I was joking
I wouldn't take it seriously that:
a sthil chain is better than an oregon chain
or
that an oregon chain was better than a sthil chain.

If I did, I'd be hitting expensive titleist golf balls in the woods & water instead of used/found topflite, pinnacle etc.
& think my score was better. LOL

All chains get dull, many variables.
I have 6 chains, new one is an oregon, other 5 ?. They all cut good & last when sharp & not grounded or lent out.
Lots of glacier silt & volcano dust in all the trees here so they get dull eventually. Spruce is the worst.

Cost? never compared them. An independent test would be nice, but :would the losers go out of business? next year, new test, other one wins? like truck of the year.

Zap: keep making "wood chips", with a sharp chain. Post pics. And keep having fun & call it work.
You're a good man doing good work. keep us posted on your progress. we enjoy reading/watching you have fun.
