I'm trying to get information on how deep a stove can go into the fireplace we have in our LR. The opening is approx 32WX28HX24D and I'm still thinking about trying to put a stove in the opening with part of the stove actually inside the fireplace opening. How far back can I go? I really like the look f a stove inside the fireplace opening, rather than say an insert.

I saw a Hearthstone Heritage today that would fit, and I'd like to leave perhaps 10-12 inches sticking out of the fireplace opening - is this possible? Any other stoves that would fit that are shorter than 28"H that I can have say 1/2 of the stove inside the opening?

My NC-13 Is flush with the opening. 74 degrees at the back of the house about 76-78 in the living room with the stove in my 1500 sq ft ranch. It will look great.

18" of my Englander 30-NC is inside the fireplace, plus the space the blower takes up on the back of it, and 10" out on the hearth. It all depends on the way your firebox is made in the fireplace.

What's it (the fireplace) made of? And what's behind it? If it's an all-masonry fireplace/chimney structure with nothing but non-combustibles from the fireplace out horizontally to daylight, then you can shove a woodstove as far into it as you want (maybe). If there's any possibility of any combustible materials back inside that wall (or to the sides), then you need to figure out that clearance, or allow for it. Some masonry fireplace/chimney stuctures have wooden structural members inside them that are invisible unless you rip the thing apart. Some pics of the proposed location would be very helpful. Rick

There are a few in fireplace/on hearth installations of Jotul stoves on here that are really beautiful!

Here's what it looks like with the current gas insert in place. As far as I know it is an all masonry fireplace surrounded by cinder blocks then eventually wood studs on the other side of the cinder blocks. This is on an inside wall down the centreline of the house.

One guy I saw today suggested I shouldn't have a cast iron stove inside the fireplace as there would be too much reflected heat for the cast iron (or cement)???

Can you tell if there has ever been a wood fire in it? Im sure with the cinder block back I dont see any issues with any type on insert going in.

Yes, definitely was a wood burning fp before the gas insert was installed. Still has soot on the inside.

If you get a stove that can be used as an insert or free standing, you can put the whole stove in the fireplace if you want. That's what we did - you can see photos here.

As long as you can get that gas line out of there and seal up any remaining holes I'm sure you can put just about any insert in there. I think the napoleon they sell at the Depot only sticks out a few inches from the front of the fireplace opening.

**Edit**
Some inserts look good without the surround, just like a freestanding stove but designed to be put in a fireplace opening.

I have a Lopi Answer with a blower that fits completely inside my fireplace opening - works great.

I've officially given up on this idea and am looking into large inserts instead. Thanks all.
