I went up on the roof to sweep my chimney today much to my surprise it did not look all that bad considering the wet wood I have been burning this season. I noticed the cap base plate did not hold the liquid nails did not keep it secure up there. What can I use to keep the base plate down on the clay flue?

Pull it off, clean the bottom as good as you can & also clean the top surface of your flue tile.
You may be able to get away with regular 30-year silicone to hold it, but I've seen it melt from the heat.
I'd use Hi-Temp RTV with a 1/4'" bead on top of the flue tile & if you've got a couple of bricks or
something heavy to set on it for 24 hours, you should be good to go.
Just don't park any vehicles within striking distance should a big ole gust of wind move em!

i took the old cap that clamps to the clay and tore the squirrel preventer off of it. Then i had a sheet metal place spot weld a top onto it. works real nice.
