Free Elm...gave the dude $20 for gas. He had a small dump truck full of rounds. Once this snow clears out of here I can start splitting. Its too slippery to be swinging an axe.

nice. My last load of elm was hard to split. Let us know how that goes for you.

Ehh hopefully the fiskars wont have a problem. If the fiskars cant do it I'd have little hope in my electric 5 ton. This snow has to go, its slowing me up big time.

...kickin' back in south PA with about 8 cord of oak waitin' to see what peeps have to say about splittin' a dumptruck load of elm :)

Good luck Bernie. Prepare to sweat!

That was good of you to pay him something for his gas and time.

Nice black Z-3 Bernie :coolhmm:

Thanks. I had a tree limb come down on it during last week's snow storm and put a fist size dent in the hood...im so mad i might just cut down all the trees along the driveway and burn them! I'd like to replace them with some dwarf fruit trees.

Bernie, you got this all done and split yet?

yep, i just finished up about 15 minutes ago...worked all through the night in light snow we have coming down....just kidding. I havent even touched it yet. my splitting area is under 2 feet of snow.

I've read that Elm has a high moisture content. Is Elm similar to Oak where you should wait 2 years before burning?

Bernie, if you get that elm split it will be ready to burn by fall. It is a high moisture content but the fibers of the wood are not as tight as oak and therefore lets the moisture out faster. Beware though, you might have to rent a splitter but then, you might get lucky and have some elm that isn't too hard to split. Most of it is really difficult to split but occasionally you will find an elm that isn't too bad. Good luck.
