I was wondering how this attachment works after a few times of use and how the filter preforms? http://www.emerusa.com/emerashvacuum.aspx
I'm sick of using standard shop vacs and killing them in the process
Also I have no idea how the filter system works because when you look the item up on the Emer website you'll only find 2 pics, thats it!
There is a pdf link that is dead.. hopefully someone has more info on this
Thanks

It's just got a standard HEPA filter, most likely similar to the ones for Shop Vacs.

Basically it looks like an inline filter you add to your currant vacuum. Sorry i don't have any experiance with it.

I have the same shop vac with a hepa filter going on 10 years. I just wait until the stove cools down. I empty it often and give it a good cleaning in the spring. The hepa filters last 3 to 4 years. Some member use the dust bags and that should also make the vac last longer. The cheap filters that come with them aren't worth bothering with. I would only use that in a wet application.

Depending on the price of that filter and new vacuum you need to buy. You might just as well get the Better vacuums available. Cheetah is one and has a good rating. I am sure there's a few others out there.

Kinda like the pleated ones from the shopvac I asume? Hoverfly, do you have any experience with it?
Thanks

I looked into to it once, it's just a can with a pleated filter and on some a valve to cut off vacuum when filled with liquid. If you been smoking Shop Vacs you are not using the right filters, use a HEPA bag and/or filter. Think about If there was no HEPA filter on those cans you would smoked your good house vac as well.

For the same size or a little bigger I concluded that it's better to spend the same amount on a new small shop vac from Lows. This one is the one I have, came with a filter bag.5-Gallon 5.5 Peak HP Heavy-Duty Portable Shop Vac

This one for the same price and buying the additional HEPA filter.3.5-Gallon 4.0 Peak HP Hang Up Wet/Dry Shop Vac

I also use a Electrolux vac that has it own HEPA filters for ash from my pellet stove. But I needed a new Shop Vac any to clean my oil fired furnace, you want to talk nasty when not using HEPA filters.

I just looked at E-bay they have Bad Ash Vac for dry use only for fifty bucks.

I was just looking at the Bad Ash Vac Fireplace Vacuum HEPA Attachment on Ebay, and came here to see if anyone had any experience with it. It would solve all my problems economically.

I have a ShopVac Hang Up that uses a 5.75"X5" cartridge filter, but they don't offer a HEPA filter replacement. My Castille stove never leaves hot ash when I clean it (brushing into the ash tray. I can handle the interior parts without burning myself), so I don't need a monstrous metal vacuum. Are there usable generic HEPA-grade filters available? Or has anyone tried the Bad Ash unit?

I use a standard lowes 40 dollar shop vac with the hepa filters. Works like a charm with zero issues. I saw someone posted to make sure that the stove is cold. I would imagine running hot burning ash through any vac, would get ugly fast and could possibly start a fire?

Yo, Topshelf!

Howzabout giving the info on your vac? I went to Lowe's and Home Depot yesterday shopping for just such a solution, but the ones they had used these non-HEPA filters, and they didn't have HEPA ones that matched these few particular models. So I need hard data: model numbers, hepa part numbers, the works.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Tired of brushing ashes,

PS: Anybody using a cheap shop vac with HEPA could also reply with the hard data needed - it's quick! It's easy! It's sooo satisfying!

I have a 10 year old shop vac and a hepa filter combo. Besides making sure the stove is cooled down. I have no dust in the house from it.

If you can't find the hepa filter. The drywall bags a just as good AFAIK. Just a bit more costly. You have to through them out when full. Where as the hepa is just knock the ash off and reuse. I usually get 3 years or so out of the hepa filter's. What model vac where you looking at?

P.S. Here is a link to the rigid craftsmen hepa filter cartridge FYI.

i tried the bad ash, didn't like it. the filter would not stay on and it plugged up fast lots more hassle than it was worth. the filter would plug up i would shake the vac like i always do the filter would fall off and all the dust would get sucked into the vac.
at work we use ridge vacs we have 3 set up with a fine dust filter and a dust bag works great but it gets expensive doing professionally 6.00 bucks per bag. we usually get 1 or 2 stove cleanings out of a bag then there full. i like the cougar vac and wanna get one for my house they really work well. i just dont think that it would hold up to my service truck.

Ok so heres what I have from Home depot not lowes, same same if you ask me

Ridgid 6.0 gal wet dry vac
Model WDO6700 dont know the actual cost? sorry

I also installed a Ridgid fine dust wet dry vac filter (Sorry not a hepa filter)Model VF5000 Cost $20.97
I also put on a cloth filter made by Emerson. model # VF2002
Actually has 3 reusable filters per package cost $5.58

When I vacuum my stove I get zero dust blowing out the discharge. Its small, not real noisy and works great.

Hope this helps

Hey Pyro, Fluemasterjr and TopShelf!

Thanks for your responses. I'm sorry to hear that youhad problems with the Badash, FMjr. I could afford that solution if it would've been less hassle than brushing and dumping.

TS, I googled your rigid model, but it must not be available anymore (looked on Rigid's site, Home Depot. HD seems to be the only retailer.) Thanks.

Pyro, the only gotcha with the Gore filter is that they don't show the dimensions of the filter, so I'll have to find one at the store and see if it fits. (my vac)

I can post dimensions if you need them? I have a brand spanking new one I just picked up on sale a few weeks back.

G00k
I just picked the smallest vac they had that would accept standard sized filters.
Mine is nothing special trust me. I would think that any brand name shop vac would due the job.

Mine's supposedly got a 5.75' X 5" cartridge, according to my previous post (I'm not at home to measure right now). Is that a "standard size"? I'd buy a hepa for it and reserve it for ash duty only if I could find one. I've been searching (googling), but haven't had much luck (or using the wrong search words) so far. My vac is not that big - shop-vac hang up that mounts on the wall - maybe 6 gallon. I just don't want to kill it; it was a present from my sweety.
