Reading this post about insurance reminded me that I should have a fire extinguisher. Amazon has a great selection, many on sale. My stove is a small, non-cat, cast iron Waterford. How big a fire extinguisher do I need, and is there a particular type I should get? as always, thanks for the great advice.

The best one is the one which is right where you need it when you need it.

Which is right by the exit door.

At least a 10lb ABC. The stove size does not matter. It is your house that will be burning.

A full one! or 2 or 3
Many folks have fire extinguishers, but don't check them very often or ever.
Get ones with a gauge so you know its full & will work.

Wow, suprised no-one mentioned a chimney fire extinguisher 10-15$ for a CHIMFEX chimney fire suppressant

Tell us where they can be had that cheap? They are over twice that much now that Rutland sells them.

Yep. In my local Walmart, they started out at 25 dollars, then were clearanced at 15. Get this- just today, I was in Walmart again, and they are now clearanced at 5 dollars. Wow! Go get yourself 2 or 3, give 'em away to wood burning friends.

Great deal . . . you really can't beat that price for a throw-away, one-time use extinguisher.

for that price, put one in every vehicle. I saved a 69 camaro that had caught fire a few years back along side the road. The owner didn't know enough to carry one and was dang lucky I was right behind him.

Just a reminder that ABC Fire extinguishers have a shelf life, every six years they need to be re-certified and every twelve years they need to be hydro tested. Also every year they should be up ended and fluffed up, “The dry powder inside of them will settle”

You should have all that plus the biggest ABC you or your significant other can handle, near your bedroom door. If you wake up in the middle of the night and need your fire extinguisher it doesn't do you any good if you can't get to it. And a little 5 pounder isn't gonna do it.

True . . . to a point.

For home owners I suggest they routinely check the gauge to make sure it is charged . . . and flip 'em upside down to keep the powder from being caked. However, no home owner that I know goes through the expense of getting them inspected and hydro-tested . . . if in doubt, throw them out . . . but as a rule most folks get 10-12 years on the cheap ones anyways before they no longer are charged up due to the nitrogen either slowly leaking out over the years or having the o-ring fail with age. In fact, the only time I might suggest going through the expense of getting them inspected/tested is if they are large-sized extinguishers . . . the smaller ones are often designed as "throw-away" models.

I agree!

Yep. I can pay 35 dollars plus shipping online, or 5 dollars at my local Walmart, as I did just yesterday. In defense of the internet site, they probably always have them in stock.
