Do log sets in a LP fireplace rob heat?

Agreed, and depending on the log set and material type I'm willing to bet you'll lose some radiant heat and perhaps some combustion efficiency. Keep in mind the unit is certified/tested with the logs in place and the design of the log set is more complex than most appreciate. In a well designed unit the bottom of the logs are specifically designed to channel a specific amount of secondary air to the flames and also balance the amount of air the flames get. The logs also retain heat like food in a refrigerator and continue to give off heat after you turn the unit off.
