Well,, just got my electric bill for Jan.. and I must say I'm happy.. Had the chimney installed the 29th of December and around the Jan We insulated the icebox.. Our basement is fully elevated,, or should I say out of ground. Its an elevated rancher and the floor of the basement is 4" below grade in the front and 6" above in the back. The builder did not insulate under the slab so the floor is COLD! and the walls had no insulation.. We were about 5-10 above outside temps.. and our pipes froze many times up on top of the mountain here in eastern Pa.. We have all electric heat,, which is bad $$ when its cold out.. our worst month was a $500 bill. But summer spring and fall its under 100 so it averages out to about $200 a month electric and heat.. Our old house was $100 electric and $300 heat a month all year on the budget system for oil.. Well with Pa pulling the rate cap PPL raised the rates 30% and I expected the worst for Jan.. We had many very cold days and nights and even with the stove it was running but not 24-7.. our usage of electric was low,, for Jan.. and the bill was that of Nov,, low $400.. We even ran a 5hp air compressor for 10 hrs one day.. By next winter the basement will be fully insulated and we will be able to run the stove 24-7.. This should keep PP&L(electric co) from getting money from us..

Just to add,, the estimated bill by the electric company,, if we used the same as last Jan our bill should have been $645ish,, not $420.. If we add solar to this mix,, might someday cut loose of the grid..well,, just not be so tied to it..

All electric here too and just got hooked up 8 days ago. Baseboard heat has been OFF since we got it burning and the house temp has not dropped below 71 ;-) This means utility bills in the winter should only be about $80 as opposed to $400 a month. And I too have a raised ranch.

We have a heat pump and normal for this time of year would be around $225 to $250.....last month's bill was $98. Viva la wood!

Similiar story here, all electric. electric bill is usually 100$ during the summer. the dec-january bill was 450$ and we were COLD ( house averaged 62 degrees probably) no joke. So we decided to get the stove. This latest electric bill only had the wood stove in use for one week of its billing cycle and the bill dropped 140$ and we were WARM. Basement at 80+/- first floor around 70 and 2nd floor bedrooms around 65 with the electric baseboard OFF. House is a small, well insulated cape. I will probably heat all winter next year with the stove during the coldest winter months and do space heating with the electric baseboard in late fall/late winter.

Heat pump has been doing the lion's share of heating with this crazy warm winter weather out here. If it's clear it can get cold at night and I have a fire going now. Been burning mostly evenings lately. Electric bill topped at $120 in January.
