My first video on you tube. I wanted to make it a little longer but my finger slipped off the button. This is a little over an hour after reloading 5 splits of Black Locust on a good coal bed with a stove top of 250. The air setting is right at #1 and I'm getting a good HOT burn! If you look close you can see the cat is bright red at the top front of the stove. Stove pipe temp 350 external, stove top 650. She shot up to 680 a little bit after this video, then dropped down slowly.

Too bad soapstone will peak out at 500 no matter how much wood you put in it...

Yeah, my thermometer must be off.

Hey Todd, When I load mine up I jam as much as I can fit into the box about an inch from the top (my wife thinks im nuts) and no matter what I can only hit 575! Maybe I have an innacurate therm from woodstock and should buy another to check? I can hold my hand for 1-2 seconds (one steamboat, two steamboat...)one inch from the top when its 575.

I can do the same thing with both cast iron stoves at that temp.

Well, I'm willing to bet after reading your latest thread it's your wood. Get a couple years ahead and you will hit 600+. You might as well get another thermometer anyways for your stove pipe which is a great tool during reloads.

good video todd, those are the kinds of things that help us visual people and newbies, what and how its supposed to look like when the stoves running. thanks i am pushing 550 stove top and i just reloaded about 45 mins ago

Beautiful fire showing there Todd. Nice video. You did well.

Those sure are gorgeous stoves!!! Looks like you've got it dialed in, good job!

Ok, I loaded her up with 4 splits for the night, engaged at #1 for about 30 minutes then set the air at .7, after about an hour of no flames she's cruising at 560 stove top and about a 260 external flue temp, then poof. I get that blue dancing flame above the splits. I couldn't get the lighting right, stupid lamp can be seen in the background, but I wanted enough light to show the temps, still learning this video stuff. Looks way better live.

I got a hold of 3 year old elm/ash mix from a co-worker and reached 650 with ease last night and by 4:00am There were a lot of coals left. As usual I got the wet wood blues :-S I started mid-season though so next year is going to be great!!! I like the vid too, and it is true that the secondary looks a lot cooler in person!!

There you go, something to look forward to next year. Maybe you can trade up with your co-worker to get you through the rest of the season?

So,

Where is the air for that secondary burn coming from? I assume the cat must have some kind of air supply; is the air going down into the firebox and feeding the flames? I would imagine if that air were coming from the primary it would be lighting up the coals.

Where in the fireview does the primary air come in? Is it directly in the front like on many non-cat stoves?

great video; secondary combustion is such a sight to see.

Great pictures Todd. I like the ghost flames too. Too bad you didn't capture the big rolling flame all the way across the top.

It is your thread so I'll let you answer karriOn

In the second video, is the cat glowing above the fire?

Yes, it is a bit difficult to see it but it definitely is glowing red.

All the air comes down the air wash plate over the window. There are a series of holes in that plate above the window that I assume gives secondary air to the cat. There is no seperate secondary air supply all combustion air is controled by the one air inlet lever and goes down the glass air wash.

It was a very faint dull glow so I didn't even attempt to film it in the second video. Kind a hard to maneuver to get a good shot of the cat.

Looks like home to me. I find that I get the most heat out of mine running it like the first video when it is super cold out. Now that it has warmed up somewhat, I am back to running like the second. I wish I was home watching mine and not being subjected to horrid Russian opera at work today.
