Feeling the Heat

first season and this is the first time i have ran out of wood.
i cut standing dead trees as they are almost always 20% or less moisture.
the past few weeks i have not had a chance to replenish my wood[pile, as i'm training for a ironman triathlon and working 40-50 hours a week.

the worst part is the soonest i will make it to the woods again is sunday morning...
looks like the furnace is going to get some exercise!

seems like cutting and splitting would be a good training tool?

I'm basically out too. I have over a cord of wood but its not really ready to burn and the stuff that is, is quite wet from all the snow and rain we've been getting. I have a days worth of dry wood left :(

ooh it is. i view it as cross training.
however after a full day of cutting hauling splitting and stacking my body is shot for the next 1-2 days

I am nearly out too. It was my first full year with the stove and a cold one at that. I just didn't put up enough last year.

I began working on next years wood in October. Next years wood is looking good. I cut an old dead oak (looks like it was dead 10 years now) and split it and it's been sunning and in the wind 5 months now. I wanted to save this for next year, but since I am about out, I put 3 wheelbarrel loads in my garage to see how it would burn. When I split it in October - it looked dry and ready to burn then. Been suplimenting with it and it's burning great. So I am hoping this will get me thru. I hate to raid next years wood - but I can always replenish it with more. I'd hat to buy wood that is green.

i think i will cut a few pine trees that are dead and use that to suppliment the other dead standing trees i cut up sunday.
pine is amazing for the warmer weather as i do not cook myself out of the house with it.

You know you are too obsessed with IM training and wood cutting if you are wearing your heart rate monitor while splitting wood.

I had to give up IM when I had kids. Training hours were just too long to keep a healthy family. I look forward to getting back when they are a bit more grown. Plus I will no longer be in the 30-35 age group which is way too loaded with REALLY fast guys. Hopefully they all start to die off soon and let me get to the podium in my 40s.

Good luck with your racing. "slow is smooth, smooth is fast".

Training for the Ironman would certainly take some time so it is understandable why you ran out of wood. Now after the triathlon perhaps you need to set a goal to be 3 year ahead on your wood supply. It is tough getting to that point but once you do it is easy going from then on.

i am luck that i have a source of wood that was cut years ago and just needs to be cut to length and split.
this is dry hardwood, however it is a 3 hour drive to go get.
so i will use that wood for 2010 winter heating, and cut 2011 in the fall after my IM
i plan on going nuts this coming winter with wood cutting. considering i spend 2 hours a day right now training for the IronMoo i will feel like i have all the time in the world once im done with that schedule.
i plan on hitting the wood pile once a weekend. i figure i can get 2 pickup trucks worth of cut and split wood in a day.
that should add up fast.

well being your first year it happends. Next year you will be more prepared as to what you will actually need

I wouldn't hard on yourself. It seems very, very common when someone is on their 1st year with a stove. It's tough to get a baseline when you have no idea what to expect in terms of consumption. Now you know and will be ready to go for next year.

Same boat here, I've started burning wood that was cut last Feb, split last April. I seems to burn fine as long as I use one or two of my last remaining dry splits to get the coals going. No hissing anyhow. Next years wood is drying nicely, still trying to scrounge more though... There's always 2012!

Wow, Ironman, that's hardcore. I'm training for my first marathon, and I can't imagine all the swimming and biking on top of that! Good luck and enjoy it!

i have done a half IM but this will be double that... and it scares me at this point(im only on week 8 of 36 for training)
might as well do it while im young, and kid free.

After doing Ironman, how about RAAM?

WOW, just when i thought people did not do things more insane than a IronMan....
im pretty sure my body will tell me that a IM is enough, but who knows...
if madison goes well, i would like to do austria or sweeden next.

Do you remember John Howard? He did RAAM (actually Great American Bike Race) after he won the Ironman. Of course he thought it would be a piece of cake to win that with only 4 competitors that year. Well, he did come in second. One must be fully prepared...

I'll be crewing for Tim Woudenberg this summer as he rides solo on a recumbent bike.

RAAM would be AWESOME! I think it would be a fun way to try and destroy my family again.

Check out Furnace Creek 500 and Badwater Marathon or Western States 100 for some way kewl racing too.

I think your own thread has been hijacked by your self.

Good luck at IMmoo. Lanzarote would be a good race.

indeed it has, but its for a good cause.
and i explained my excuse as to why i cant replenish my supply of wood asap.
and why i even ran out in the first place.
the good news is, i found some dry stuff under the pile i assumed was all green wood.
so i am in good shape for now.
going out tonight to cut a pickup truck worth of wood, as i was recruited to work on sunday...

A ironman never runs out of wood. Train hard for next year grasshopper. :)
