Stopped by the local Menards today for some items; decided to check pellets. Ozark Hardwood Pellets for $3.97/bag.
That works out to $198.50/ton. 18 Tons in stock, I bought 3 tons. They will deliver them Monday, on the pallets, to my barn for $55.
Total cost: $216.83/ton + tax. In this land where folks think pellets are rabbit items, this is a good deal.

I have burned almost 2 tons of the OHPs so far this year. Other than a little high on the ash content, I am pleased. No more $400 electric bills.

I checked on the way home, the local Rural King has the exact same pellet for $275/ton. No delivery. (With only a Ford Ranger, it takes a long time to move a ton of pellets.

(Does this purchase make me a pig?) :)

For your qualifications as a pig you'll have to speak to jtakeman. Then there are the pellet snobs in which case you need to talk to littlesmokey.

Annual dues must be remitted to macman for the pigs and I don't know who handles that for the snobs.

I understand that if Eric doesn't get his cut for the back room brew stash you'll be in trouble.

Opus74,

I have hauled pellets in my Ford Ranger.

You are correct. It can take a long time. I have a fiberglass tonneau cover ( not a cap) over the bed. Do not take to take it off ( takes two people). Can haul 17 bags at a time without removing the cover. Not the easiest to load and unload.

Your price per ton and delivery charge is a SWEET deal. Good decision.

Enjoy,

Ranger

P.S. I think that you should qualify as a pellet Pig.

I think the rules state more than 3 tons and must be self hauled. I bumped the thread for the other new member wanna bee's. I also asked the q's about having delivered.

I think the spring buy has begun early so lets get some new members in the pellet pig club.

Good luck

I was only kidding about the pig thing.
I was just happy with the deal I got, so I bought a bunch.
:)

Menard's has the OHP pellets on sale Feb 19,20,,21 for $3.50 / bag. I'm in for 4 ton. Plus, I should get a 2% rebate at the end of the year for using their credit card. That should take care of me for almost two years. My pellet stove is the primary source of heat for my 1600 sq ft house, and I'm at 85 bags so far this year. I'm used to the Rocky Mountain pellets. They burn clean, very little ash, and good heat. If the OHP's come reasonably close we'll be in pig heaven.

Whereabouts are you 4Duffn. Over here on the Franklin County side we are on bag # 95 this year.

The OHPs are little high in ash, but they are hot. It's all we have burned since we are back in Illinois.
We shut the stove down this weekend with the great weather. Couldn't keep the house at less than 82 °F . :)

It'll be back on Tuesday as we are down to 74 °F now.

Hey Opus 74!

I'm not too far from you. About three miles south of Benton.
Actually have some relatives in Coello.

Yes, it was a great weekend. We shut the stove off and opened all the windows. I even cooked out on the deck saturday evening in a tee shirt. It might be back down in the teens tonight, but springs on the way! Oink Oink!

The OHP's don't want to keep feeding in my quad this is the second time it has shut down with pellets left in the hopper but none at the inlet. I had really good luck with the rocky mountains and they fed better in my castile but higher priced. There is a stove company that sells Harman, regency, and quad's by me that will sell me softwood pellets that they say my quad will like better than the rocky mountains with less ash for 200.00 a ton. I am going to pick up a few bags this weekend and give them a test drive. If they are better than the rocky mountains I will be stoked.

If you are interested in where they are at let me know.

Bob

Let us know how they work for you, Bob.
Missouri is not that far away..... :)

Yeah for 200.00 a ton compared to some of the other prices I see arouind on here for quality pellets makes me feel lucky. I thought 200.00 should be at the top of the price range for pellets....wow was I wrong.

I will have a few bags to test run hopefully Saturday and will have some news Sunday on how they look and seem to be burning.

Bob

The sale is over.....unfortunately.

You didn't miss out much, those OHP pellets are a hit and miss with regard to quality. I have maybe 12 bags from 2 years ago, I plan to burn when it gets warmer outside, and I will mix them 50/50 with a better pellet. When I first tried them I thought they were good. I bought a 1/2 ton, and now I think they are bad. Ash is the biggest problem, alot of ash when they burn. Alot of fines. Ever wonder why those pellets are dark brown in color? BARK! They sure arn't made from walnut sawdust... The only way I would take those is if they were FREE.

I can get Fuel King (made from oak saw dust) for $200 a ton from my Quadrafire dealer, a much better pellet, hotter and alot less ash. Shop around you'll find a better pellet for the same price. I am just finishing my 5th season of heating with my Quadrafire Castile.

I drove from Dubuque Iowa to LaCrosse Wisconsin (about 100 miles) last weekend for 15 bags of Blazers. I wanted to try them. A really good hot pellet with very little ash and fines. The heat output is comparible to Fuel Kings. Fuel Kings have more ash and fines. The Blazers cost me $6.00 and Fuel Kings are $4.00. For the $2.00 difference I will stick with the Fuel Kings.

IMHO, OHP's Suck.

I am down to 4 bags of OHP out of the 10 I started with... what the heck they were on sale for 3.89 a bag and it was my first pellet burn ever. I picked up two bags of rocky mountains a few days after that and I suddenly do not want to burn the OHP's and want to go buy more Rocky Mountains or try the stove places pellets for 200 a ton. I can get the rocky mountains or fuel kings at sutherlands 4.49 a bag I think.

I have to agree with THZ123...I tried those ozarks and Menards can keep em. They were one of the dirtiest pellets I have burned but then who knows how long Menards had them in stock. Here nothing new comes in until the last bad bag goes out the door. Poor choices around this neck of the woods. Good Luck with your purchase and hope they burn good for you.

It only takes two trips to haul a ton with a Ford Ranger ,and if you have a trailer one trip . I have had 25 bags on mine for about 10 miles ,no problem it is a little low in the back though . For Tough .

Well, THZ, my 2 choices around here are: OHP or whatever leftovers are at TSC.
Like I said earlier 99.45% of the folks around here don't know what a pellet is.
I have had no issues at all with the OHPs. Bag a day - house is 74 °F or more.
And no more $400 electric bills.
"I've got an ash-vac for that."

:)
