Also, 16 inches isn't much in front of the door. Stuff spills out all the time. Consider making the hearth bigger, you'll be happy later.
 
build it for the worse case scenario, ie nuclear reactor stoves.

Oh boy, I can see it now. 'Glowing' reviews for the new lead lined hearths.

Go back to your Mansfield manual and read further: "An acceptable floor protector is a 3/8” (10 mm) minimum
thickness non-combustible or listed floor protector with an “R” factor of 1.0."

That's not much of an R factor. The Hearthstone Homestead I'm considering with 6" legs requires an R-factor of 2.4, and with 4" legs that jumps up to R - 6.6 !!
