You folks have been very helpful with informing my selection for a gas stove, now I need to make a decision about a wood burner.
First, I want to know the "real" name for what I am seeking. This installation in for new construction in a living room. It will be a wood burner with a chimney and be a closed unit with a large glass panel to see the fire. It will not be free standing but rather built into the wall to look as much as possible like an open woodburning fireplace of old; it will have a hearth and stone surround.
So, what is the name of what i am looking for: woodstove, insert, zero clearance.....?

And, because there certainly are some good threads that already exist to help folks select an efficient, large window, log burner, I would appreciate your directing me to some of them, so I don't have to "reinvent the wheel" here.
Thanks for all your help.

google rsf opel, rsf topaz, rsf rennaissance - h: you'll find what you are looking for.

Sounds like Zero Clearance Fire Place is what you are looking for.
Mine is a Fireplace Xtrordinair Elite 44

The Quadrafire FP7100 comes to mind - It's a fireplace with the efficiency of an insert, and is rated for quite a large number of BTUS. How many square feet are you heating? Santa Cruz sounds warm - this unit might be a bit much for your appllication, but it sounds liek it's got the size you want.

If I had a fireplace, I would definately throw an insert in there. My buddy has been burning in his fireplace for years. This winter I finally talked him into an insert and he thanks me everytime I see him. He gets all the visual effects of a fireplace, but with the hot steel and blower on the insert, he barely needs to put the thermostat on. He has a Napolean insert, but there are many good brands out there. Good luck.

Thanks. Zero clearance fire places, then, are for new construction and mean they have glass doors? The term fireplace always meant to me something that was open and inefficient. This terminology is really throwing me.
Gratefully,

Looks like a fine unit, and it is carried, according to the manufacturer's web site, by my local SCruz store. Thank you, R

I guess I was not very clear. I do not have a fireplace. This is NEW construction--starting from scratch. First I am trying to figure out what you call the thing I want for burning logs (bay, oak, & redwood) behind glass, in a new installation. Then I need to locate one.
Thanks for your help, R
