While cleaning my VC Encore NC 1450 today (a warm day here) I decided to take out the refractory shoe and vacuum it and underneath (as recommended by the dealer) only to end up destroying the Insul Gasket Shoe part# 30002418. Called my local dealer to find out they have none in stock and will take a week to get.

I wondered if there is a generic replacement for this part or if one can be fabricated out of a like type gasket material commonly available.

Anyone have any ideas?

Unfortunately you'll have a hard time finding a gasket that will work. You could form a makeshift one if you could get a hold of some very thin fiberglass flat gasket or a piece of thin fiberglass material.

OR Interam expandable catalytic gasket?

What is the function of the gasket? Is it mechanical or insulating and what would happen if not present?

It prevents leaks between the shoe and the stove body. In other words, in ensures that the show receives and delivers the right amount of air to the coal bed.
