I live in central MA area and interested in buying some used propane tanks. Anyone know of any place within driving distance that sells them?

I am in greenfield area in the same boat. I have a leed i'm checking out but nothing yet. What is the going rate?

I am also in the process of looking for a tank or tanks . Here is what I have come up with so far . I called a local LP supplier and told him that I was looking for a scrap out tank . He gave me another guys number , This guy knew of a guy that handles the reclaims here in Wisconsin . I actually am waiting for a call back now . What I was told for a price was actual scrap price plus .02 per pound .
So I would say call a major LP supplier and start there and for price well thats what they told me .

I live in the Finger Lakes area in New York State, about 50 minutes south of Syracuse and I'm looking for one or more 500 gallon tanks for thermal storage. Does anyone know of a company in the area that might sell used propane tanks or something similar? Also, I've seen some vague references made in other posts to properly cleaning out propane tanks so that any residue is eliminated. Can anyone tell me what residues commonly occur in used propane tanks and what the implications are (boiler corrosion, etc)? This is such a great forum, I sure appreciate everyone's posts.

The residue is mercaptan, and its not really an issue of corrosion, its one of odor - if you don't flush out the tank and then you have a leak in the house, the mercaptan smell can be quite strong. I got a tank in October and have not installed it yet. It has been sitting inside, in the heated shop, all winter. It no longer has any odor. Mercaptan is eventually neutralized by exposure to oxygen, so the odor from an open tank will diminish over time. If you want to use the tank right away, you will need to flush it with an oxidizing agent such as oxy-clean or hydrogen peroxide. You will need a lot!

I placed an add on the wanted for sale section of this website and had my tanks in a couple weeks. I paid $250/ea which I think is reasonable, 500 gallon tanks. Place an add and see how it goes. I have heard 6 gallons of chlorine mixed with water and circulated in each tank for a couple hours should neutralize the smell rom these used tanks.

PMd you a lead. Let me know if it works out as I should be ready for them by fall.

I'm in NH, and for the life of me can't get my hands on a tank, or at least get one cheaply. None of the propane suppliers in my area will sell me a 250g tank new or used. They all want to give you the tank in exchange for always buying your propane from them, regardless of the price.

Gates salvage in Hardwick, VT (just NW of St. Johnsbury) was a place suggested by Pybyr as having lots of tanks for sale. If you have access to a decent flatbed trailer it might be a bit of a drive but do-able. A single 250 would probably ride in a full-bed pickup.

Whenever I do my install I plan on going with a single 250 to start with (not a lot of room in my basement, and my house is small so heat load isn't too bad). Unclehenrys seems to be a good way to find one here in Maine.

Since many people are looking for storage tanks... maybe this would make a good sticky? Maybe an ongoing list of possible places to buy a tank?
