Hi, I searched and could not find much on bulk storage so I thought I would ask. I am working on a hopper to store pellets in. Is there any down side to this other than having a hard time making a dumping system to get the pellets out. I tried a auger but it did not work out it would cut the pellets like a meat grinder. So I'm working on a large sort of ball valve. Hopper will be 3'x3' x 70"H and totally enclosed.

There is no problem asking about bulk storage here no pane was pointing you to a forum that handles a lot of bulk storage questions because of the fuel involved.

The only issues I can see with doing what you are trying is moisture (you don't want puff balls coming out when you fill up your bucket to load the stove with) or dust issues when loading the hopper as it is explosive in the right concentration when combined with and open flame or spark. In fact it is a culprit in a lot of pellet plant fires.

So as long as you take care of any way for moisture to get into your hopper and keep the dust issue under control it should be doable.

I would not be drawing off the bottom so dust will trapped at the bottom until most all pellets are used up. Top will be sealed.

Just curious, here, but if the top is sealed, and you aren't drawing off the bottom, do you plan to burn them right in there?

I don't know if this helps or not, but I am planning to get 3 or 4 - 55 gal. drums with the sealed tops. I can move the drums with a drum dolly and I think I can get a ton into 3 maybe 4 drums. Has anyone tried this method? Just a thought.

Hello

I spoke with the sales engineer at this company in Goffstown NH.
http://www.woodpellets.com/services/default.aspx << See truck and hose at bottom of this web page.

Right now they deliver wood pellets in Bulk with a truck and a hose to blow them into your storage bin.

He says they are currently in development of a new system called "Magic Bucket" This will blow the pellets into a bucket next to your stove or into your stove!!!

Here are some nice guidelins for building your own storage bin.

Good luck

Ha,Ha, no. I am not burning them in the Bin. I put a pipe about 5" from bottom. Like I said I'm working on it so I need ideas. I do like the 55 gal. barrel idea.

Lets not demean IBC. I'm a member of the Royal Order of the Golden Ear over there...."OGE" :)

Personally, I keep my pellets on the original skids with the original shrink film and plastic boots intact. The corn goes in 2 300 bushel GSI grain tanks.

It's been my experience over the 14 years of fooling with this stuff that the more you handle pellets (like corn to a lesser extent), the more they degrade. Better to not handle them at all and leave them on the skids they came on, which is why I have a forklift...... of course the forklift moves other things as well.
