ok for some reason tonite my stove was constanly making a ticking sound while it was heating up. figure it's from getting warm and the metal is expanding. Just wierd hasn't done it before. then for some reason i am getting this weird smell from it. smells like the paints burning off the stove. it's not even that hot. 450 or 500 on the stove top and chimney is 350 and the blowers on as well. kinda freaking me out a bit. anyone have this same issue?

How old is your stove? New stoves will typically give off a weird odor during the first couple of burns.......they are treated with a chemical that has to burn off. Your Owners Manual should tell you this, and recommend that you have some windows open during the first couple of burns, and even leave the room if necessary.

If your stove is NOT new, (lots of burning hours in it), then I'd begin to wonder who put the cat in the firebox!!

As for ticking sounds.........heck...........I get those with every burn, as the metal stretches, expands, heats up.........very normal.

It isn't an issue. Just a steel stove warming up. Or cooling down for that matter. It sounds like you had let it burn down and go out for the first time in a while and were restarting it. Ticks and "bongs" are a regular part of the symphony from my 30 just like it has been with all of my steel stoves. And to a lesser degree with my iron ones. The friction/gravity door latch on the 30 is especially prone to "bongs".

the ticks really didn't bother me as much as the smell did. kinda wierd. thought maybe stove was actually hotter than what the temp actually said on top. i need to get a temp gun and see. also my stove pipe i turning white, just must be some cheap paint because i don't get it that hot.

catching up on posts.........

I'm not a visual person but have no problem imagining BB's bongs arrayed around his 30

Better get a new temp gauge...you could be over firing you stove if the pipe is turning white. And the smell could be from over firing it too.

I thought it was: "Cut the blue wire with the white stripe, not the white wire with the blue stripe...."
