Well it is hard to believe that a few weeks ago we were concerned that we would not get the chance to adequately test our new stove out.... This morning we were minus 16 degrees celsius with a windchill that took the feeling down to 21 degrees below freezing!

Needless to say we are still going through wood at quite a quick clip.

While the stove we purchased is far from the ideal size it is definitely making a difference with our electrical bill. As we move into better wood (mostly ash for next year) we will see even more savings.

Lots to learn and as the weather here in Manitoba never quite goes as planned we will be keeping a supply of wood stacked by the stove right until the end of June just in case.

At the same time we have been using the in laws old smoke dragon KOZI to boil off maple syrup and we have almost 20 pints ready to go for the year for pancakes, waffles and baking. We have been using up some of our junkier wood splits as the stove is huge and it doesn't matter how much wood it takes as the in laws make this their full time hobby for the few days that they take off the sap.

Dropping to 14 degrees tonight then single digits on Friday night so I'll bring some beech in when I get home.

43*F here, feels like 36. Going down to the low twenties tonight. Will have a fire tonight, good. Actually kind of missed it this week.

Still burning here as well . . . still haven't gone a single day or night without having a fire going at some point . . . although there were a few days when I only needed one fire at night to keep the place warm.

I've been burning on and off for the last few weeks.

It's easier to let the house sit in the low 60's and just run a little space heater in the bedroom overnight when the weather gets like this.

Gonna be burning tonight though!

75 and windy today. Snow showers in the morning and 27 degrees tomorrow night. The 30 burned a small one last night but will be kickin tomorrow night.

We had a few days up in the 70sF, then yesterday it snowed, and there was a thick layer of frost this morning. I skipped the evening fire on those warm weekend evenings, but the day still started with a fire to warm up. My wood stove provides supplemental heat, but I've burned less than a tank of oil. Between that and the pleasure of a wood fire, it's a good bargain.

pretty much the same here although I did have a nights where i didnt need the fire... but looks like i will be burning for the next 3 days... and next week at night

Going down to -18 (0 F) here tonight with a 35-50 KPH wind from the north west. Tomorrows high only going to -1 (30 F) during the day tomorrow. toasty warm here in the house (72) and feeling just great. "Put another log on the fire........................!!!!!

It's still 62 degrees here so far tonight. The next three of the four days we will have highs in the low 40s. So, some burning will take place. But after that we are back up to the mid 60s and will hit 70 the following weekend.

Which is totally fine by me.

Have slowed down quite a bit...... 5 years with my Oslo and I've burned the least amount of wood since I purchased it.
I burn 24/7 and got away with 3 cords this year. This weekend it's supposed to be chilly, so the flavor this weekend will be
Hemlock Kindling and junk splits of Red Maple & Cherry....no need to tap into Hickory or my white oak.

Hey Brown, how old is your stone farm house?
I wonder if you got me beat, I have a really old cape build it 1750.

It's close! The best we can figure out is that the original portion was built in 1741.

46 now, low of 36 tonight. Tomorrow 37 high and 19 low. I'm caught without any wood in the house. I've been burning some maple and oak that I split back in December. I had a fire this morning and kept the house over 67 all day. The furnace still hasn't kicked on today. I'm slacking big time since I got back to work. I'm sick of burning this green wood. I don't want to engage the cat and killm it prematurely. I should have brought in wood tonight. We went out to eat and grocery shopping and didn't get back until after 8 pm. My knees are killing me because I've been kneeling on cocrete for the past two days straight. I'll go with the furnace for tonight, but tomorrow there will be fire! Next year I will not run out of wood!

I'm jeallows! I love maple syrup, but have never had the real stuff like that! Only grocery store bought. There are a lot of people who do it around here. Maybe I'll try to find some local stuff.

Still burning 24/7 here. We've had a couple 60° days where I didn't have to add wood to the stove during the day, but it holds coals all day from the night before anyway. Will have a fire in the stove at least off and on until Memorial Day. After that we have our outdoor firepit going many nights during the summer.

15°F this morning.

11 tonight. The stove will be working.

1 month to go and I'll quit May 1 no matter what just out of shear spite for winter.

I think I burned more wood last year in April than in some of the winter months! I hope we don't have a repeat this year. Our burning has definitely slowed, but usually by this time of the year I am looking forward to a break anyway. Of course that break is replaced by mowing 2.5 acres every week.

Heading up to SoVT tonight. Teens tonight and low 20's Saturday night. The Jotul will be called into action. On another note, this nice cold weather will help keep the snow on the mountain!

We haven't missed a morning or evening burn yet. We usually burn a good fire in the morning then bank the coals for the evening. I've had to use some kindling on a few occasions when I felt I didn't have enough coals for a full sized split relight.

With the cold weather yesterday and today we've had a steady fire going.

Thought I was all done last week, but it snowed up here on the mountain today. Be in the 30s tonight. Might just stay cool enough at night for me to crank up the new stove when it gets here next week. Or not.

Well, doesn't matter, I'll crank it up anyway :)

Two sparrows started moving in to the chimney last week and had to get them out of the stove via the front door. Cleared out the straw and fired it up tonight. Will be putting some screening around the cap once the last few chilled nights pass

The fire hasn't gone out yet here. Granted, there have been a few days with only one load but it sure is nice to still have enough coals 20 hours later to start the next fire!

Remember 2009 folks. Many still had fires in June and even July! We usually quit burning sometime in May here; usually mid May.
