Feeling the Heat

I'm still hoping to get the King this summer, and I'm wondering if the side shields are worth the investment. I plan to get the rear shield so I can place it a little closer to the wall...since I have ceiling fans in every room in the house (except dining and kitchen), I'm not planning on getting a fan on the stove. But, I'm undecided about the side shields. I do not need the side shields for clearance purposes...the closest side wall is 12' away.

I'm wondering if the side shields would help make the stove more convective than radiant?
If so, would there really be any advantage to this since I have a ceiling fan in the same room as the stove? Actually, the ceiling fan is centered in the living area. There are no fans in the dining area nor kitchen.

Any thoughts, experiences or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

They would help if the closest combustible, be that a wood pile or furniture is less than 18" from the stove. I think they can be added later if nothing is very close. You might want to try it out for a season and see.

Id say forget about the side shields and spend the extra on the fan. the fans really help out even when on low. and on those really cold days you won't regret it..

I just went through this exact same debate about 5 weeks ago and I am happy to say that I decided to go with the side shields and fan. With that being said; I purchased the King Ultra which comes with the side shields, and the fan essentially serves as a rear shield. I do have combustable closeness potential issues without them. The rear shield and double wall pipe enabled me to place my stove closer to the wall. That is one heck of a big stove and after all measuremtns considered, it has the potential to take up some serious room.

I think you will be absolutely 100% pleased weth whatever set-up you decide to go with...Great Stove!

There won't be any combustibles within 24" of the stove, unless we occasionally place something on the over-sized hearth for drying purposes. I like the idea of trying first and adding it later if necessary...which is the same approach I was considering for the attached fan since I do have ceiling fans.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts.

your ceiling fans wont do what the fan on the stove can do. i mean they will help circulate the heat since it looks like you have a open floor plan. but those fans will really move the heat. id spend the money and get the fans. imho

I couldn't agree more. When its cold out or you want to bring the house temp up fast, you will get a lot more heat out of your stove with the blowers. I have a ceiling fan 6' from the stove but they serve very different functions.

As for the side shields, I am going to take them off my ultra before next season.

plus you always have the option of turning the fans off. i havent used mine in a month now that its been warmer the house heats just fine without them.. also giving it a longer burn time.

The fans are a MUSTTT!!!!

It sounds as if the consensus is...indifference on the side shields, but a must on the fans.

I'll certainly keep this in mind while pricing this stove.

Thanks for the input!!!
