Convection blower started to make a humming, straining sound ,sometimes no air would be blowing at the # 1 low setting then it would come on or if I increased the speed it went away. This seemed to happen on start-up more that if the stove was running for a while. I ran 24/7 Dec,Jan much of the time on low no with no problems If I did use T-stat I left it on Medium speed.Last week stove was running on medium speed and I smelled like hot metal smell from the other room found that blower was not working , played with the speed settings it came on and I shut the stove down and called the dealer, he installed a new blower yesterday, this morning I hear kind of the same noise again, speed it up it goes away. I put a srewdriver on it and I can feel the blower kind of shake when the noise appears. Am I dealing with a vibration problem or do you think something else ?

Sounds like lack of lube to me. Oil it and try again. Use the 10 wieght 3 & 1 motor oil in the blue can or better. WD-40 will not last long But can lead you to the fact it is a lack of lube issue!

keep us posted please!

I had the same problem and had the convection blower replaced in Dec. Been running fine until a few weeks ago when it started making the humming/chugging noise when snap disc closes and the blower turns on, but it appears intermittent and didn't do it last night. Besides that it is ok, but I believe the Leyden does have some sort of blower issues on some units.

Also, the Leyden blowers are sealed units and not to be oiled per Travis Industries and my dealer.

Rich, I thought the same thing as I couldn't see any oil port on mine. Maybe my blower is different, but when I recently removed the blower the oil port was clearly there, with a little yellow plug in it. For whatever reason the port points down and is under the motor. Maybe this allows the oil to drain away from the motor/bearing. I don't see any reason the blower motor can't be rotated 180 degrees on the mounting plate, so that's what I am going to do on mine, so port is above the motor. I don't see any oil port on the combustion blower though.

My Astoria had the yellow plugs on the convection blower motor, and they faced straight up. 2 drops of lightweight 20w oil after spring cleaning......very quiet.

Even if it doesn't have the oil ports. I would still lube it to quite it down. It will keep you going until the replacement arrives. Leave it as is and it will lock up on ya. No biggie this time of year, But in mid winter you would be using another form of heat!

Most of these blowers are using sleeve bearings(IMO always need a fresh supply of lube to stay loose) and not sealed roller bearings. If it is a sealed bearing adding lube may not do anything for you! My bigE didn't have the oil ports and I still lubed it. Part of the no lube thing may be because the Manu would rather sell you a new blower every few years(if they last that long). I see no issues if you use the right lube. WD-40 would just wash out the good stuff and leave you with little to no lube left. That would be bad! Of coarse this is just my opinion. And what do I know????

Rich I was kind of thinking the same thing that Travis may have some blower problems, I was at work when the tech came an install the new blower and he told my wife you should always run your blower on HI, I don't go for that type statement, why then put speed controls on them? LOL makes me think they know something we don't about this subject. I will contact them Monday and have them come out when I'm there. It's got me stumped I watched the cage fan last nite with a flashlight and it looks smooth no wobble on low but I have that noise ,then I increase the speed one click it's gone. it almost reminds me of a washing machine off balance.I ran it for an half an hour on Med speed then went back to low ran great the rest of the night. My old blower did the same thing as this one up to last week when it stop blowing on a med speed and the stove started to over heat, thats when I called the dealer, noise is one thing and I know there are safetys built in for this type of thing but I do not feel comfortable running the stove at night when we are sleeping until I get this right I will keep you posted how I make out

Thanks Mike let me know how you make out when you do that. I did see the yellow plug on the underside of mine. The dealer tech still said not serviceable, don't know why.

"Always run the blower on high" - Never heard that one before....! That's ridiculous.

Sounds like my 1st conv. blower did the same as yours. Would'nt start at all when on low at start-up. increase speed to 2 and it would start but had a loud chugging along noise on 1 and 2. Also vibration noise on #5.

My new blower is ok and quiet but sometimes makes that chugging sound at start-up and then goes away.

Keep me (us) here posted on what you find out.

Sure thing Rich, will keep u posted. Strange the ports upside down???

Called the dealer and they sent the same tech that swapped out my blowers. He told me after he removed the old blower it felt good to him, no binding etc and didn't think the blower was the problem, but he had the work order to install new blower ( I was still under warranty) which ended the 4-15-10 talk about playing it close LOL.Started up the stove and it started to make the noise, what he notice was when the auger went on the noise decreased and the fan speed increased some. I really had to listen if I had a TV on I would have missed it. He tells me many of the blower noise problems he runs into seems to happen on the lower speeds and just not Travis stoves. Then he makes an adjustment to what he called a vibration damping ring, which to me looked like a big Oring around the motor, it did calm it down alittle but noise was still there. Then just like when you bring your car into the garage for that nagging problem and and it goes away just as you pull in, the stove starts to run good on low, med , high My feelings at this time that it may be a control board issue and ran it passed him. He called Travis tech support and ask if their were aware of any low speed blower problems, they said no, other than a harmonic issue that can happen between the two fans, but they didn't thing that was my problem. The tech stayed at my house 2hrs trying to get see if the noise would come back it did not and has not returned. Trying to pin him down on the low speed noise in blowers that he encounters I didn't get much any where, he said things like when you run a lower speed the voltage is lowered and the motors run hotter might be doing it etc.. I'm thinking he'll be back soon haaha My knowledge of electrical side of things are on the low side, I would think if it was a voltage issue that when the auger came on it would draw more juice away from the blower and would become noiser, but that didn't happen things got better when the auger came on??My gut feeling that it's the controller. I'm going to look for any oil ports also and try what Jay suggested about the lube I fogot to look when the tech was here and had the side off. I held off on any oil while going back and forth with the dealer while still under the warranty. You guys got any thoughts on this, I hope it don't come back but I think it will LOL

flame thrower,

You still got this problem with the room blower?

Mine was doing that same thing this morning when on blower setting #2. Told wife to turn blower up to 3 and it went away; same symptoms I had with my first blower and even with this second one last winter. Now, since this is my second blower to have this issue I am certain it is NOT the blower. I just took this out last week and cleaned it real good and oiled with 2 drops sae 20 oil in oil ports. The blower is fine. I am convinced that it's the control board. On low setting the board must send a lower voltage or current to the blower motor so it spins slower; that is where the problem is!

Anyone know how much a Leyden control board is? No way i'm having dealer out again for this, I get charged a standard fee of like $65 just for them to show up at my door. I'd rather buy a new board and pop it in myself. Too bad we can't buy these online...

I ran the stove just a few more weeks in April then shut it down for the summer. I did not hear any more noise, but my wife claimed she might have heard the noise for a few moments while in the other room, so not sure LOL It's been warm here in CT just started to cool down I started it up last night for an hour just to get the chill out of the house no noise, I will keep you updated as I start to run it more.
