No snow but in the thirties tonight and tomorrow night and frost warning. Eighty by the weekend again.

No white stuff and it's unlikely we'll see any, though the Whites are going to get it tonight.

Fireview is fired up and cruising nicely at about 550 now. Oughtta take the chill of things nicely. I think this is when I most appreciate the woodstove.

We're all a bit spoiled with this early spring, but nothing unusual is happening.

Below is a photo I took of Blue Mountain Lake three years ago on April 29. It looks like a B&W photo, but it is a color shot of the dreariest spring day I ever remember up there. I went up to canoe and found the entire lake completely frozen.

I remember driving through the Green Mountains in VT before I got married (musta been 35 years ago) and there were power lines down all over due to 13" of heavy snow. It was early May, the day after Mother's Day.

When I was guiding up in the ADKs, on my first trip of the season one year I drove through a blizzard to get up to Lake Placid. My records show it was May 23.

All that aside, I'm gonna break down and start a fire tonight. Not in the stove, but upstairs in the fireplace. This is perfect fireplace weather.

started gettin a little chill @2:00, momma fired up the summit then.. came home to warm house, and fired some dry pine in the stove... good shoulder time to burn it.

Sitting here right now watching an almost perfect secondary burn happening. It has been a day of cold, no-let-up north wind with occasional rain and snow showers. Stove has been putting along for the last 24 hours and the temp here is perfect. All is well.

Freeze warning. On my last load of dry wood, too. Bummer.

Down to 34 possibly tonight, I started up the stove around 6:30pm tonight, got it burning slow just to keep the chill out!

Just looked at the forecast. Frost by morning and over 90 by Sunday. The Northern Virginia weather I know and love. Fire one night and A/C the next day.

And, if your current stove makes the basement too much, I'd move it upstairs and put the smaller stove in the basement. Should give you a more comfortable home.

32 here at midnight. Just loaded for the second time tonight. Looks like burning tomorrow and Thurs night as well. Almost moved the face cord on the patio back out to the woodpile last weekend. Guess I'm glad I didn't!

32 and raining at midnight. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw some flurries...

just got the stove going for the night. just checked the temp outside 33 and still dropping. so it ain't over yet here.

hey batten if your dehum is heating your basement up to much turn it down. i run mine half way at normal. it doesn't heat the basement. when i ran it for drier air it didn't get any drier and the basement got hot. when i walk into a customers house to do a job and head down to the basement that is hot i usually find a dehumidifier running full. all it does past the half way set point on the dial is run your electric bill up. turned all the way up it never gets satisfied.

It's in the lower forties-upper thirties here on Long Island tonight, too. I had a quick hot fire this morning, and now I have my little insert cooking through the night. To be honest, I'm glad we're having a cold night. I can't explain the satisfaction I get from sitting in the living room with my insert cranking, drinking a beer, and eating cold pizza. I love this thing. I figure it's one of my last nights until September. Don't get me wrong I love summer, but I really enjoyed my first winter with my insert.

45 right now and temps dropping. We be burning. It ain't over til the big lady is singing.

Woke up to 6 to 8 inches on the deck this morning. Think I will grab the skis and skins and head over to Whiteface. Skin up - Ski down. Higher elevations are supposed to get over a foot by noon today.

Right now it is 45 with a high of about 50 today. But, in about 48 hours it will be 80 degrees here. Weird stuff.

And here we keep hoping that it will soon quit freezing every night. It is supposed to finally warm up again though after tonight's freeze.

I check the weather every night to see how I need to load the stove. After tonight it looks like I may get some time off. :)

Everything we got last weekend is gone below 10K. Today, warm-upper 50's. Snow for the next three days. I hope it's not gonna be one of "those" summers.

Stacked another cord of red oak (my wood guy is The Man) yesterday evening and ran the Jotul. Looks like we'll be burning again tonight. No worries. In these temps the charge of oak seems to run forever.

Down to 53 °F this morning....almost put on a long sleeve shirt

A VC Vigilant in my living room? :ahhh: I think that's how they got the reputation as creosote factories. Really has to be run hot to run clean. My living room is about the size of a pantry. Way overkill. Even an F3 might be too much. Besides, it wouldn't fit in the fireplace.

I figure that with the small stove upstairs, I can just run the Vig in the morning to take the chill off and then after work and overnight. The second stove would cover the overlap when we're in the living room after dinner. Something to look at like all you lucky folks with glass doors on stoves in the living space.

Really just musing at this point. I was in one of the local stove shops and they had some on sale. That, plus the 30% tax credit got me thinking. I'm not cheap, but I can only spend it once. No six figure incomes in this household. Oldest son getting married in July, putting a lot of dough and sweat equity in this place that ain't mine already. I scratch my landlord's back plenty that way as well. In the process of building a new shed in the backyard to replace the one I had to tear down a couple weeks ago. That's the cost of the stove right there. Business has been real slow for a couple years now, I need major dental work way beyond what my insurance will cough up, wife needs some as well, new grandson on the way in June, etc. Plus, I've been thinking of getting a bigger saw and a splitter and going with log lengths from now on. That will pay for itself a lot faster than a new stove.

Maybe I'll hit the lottery. Hafta buy a ticket first, though.

fbelec, I didn't know that about the dehumidifiers. I'll try turning the damn thing down. It's a huge part of my electric bill, but I have to keep the humidity down below 50% in the shop. Otherwise, the instruments I glue together in summer will crack when the wood shrinks in the winter. Repeat business, but not the kind that earns a good reputation for me. I've been keeping it turned up all the way, but you're right, it doesn't really take much more water out of the air once the air starts to dry out. What you are saying makes total sense, it's probably just cycling and not doing any dehumidifying. I just never thought about it before. Thanks.

merged the two threads. it was like they were talking to each other.

This is what it looked like in Jay this morning at 8am

So, I grabbed the backcountry skis, skinned up 1500 feet at Whiteface and skied down. survival skiing, reall wet heavy stuff, over a foot deep. Likely will do a short
burn tonight, supposed to be in the high 30*s
