My friends Jotul Castine, Ivory Enamel is chipping on the top and front of the stove, the stove is three years old. This first happen about a year ago to the top of the stove and the dealer replaced the top. His stove has not been used for about a month and now the top and front are starting to chip. He even watched a chip pop off the top one day.

During the burning season he burns 24/7 (oct-march) and is very careful with his temps (about 650). His stove thermometer is on the flue pipe exiting the stove which is all so Ivory Enamel and that area is fine. he contacted the dealer again and the dealer wants him to send pic's of the damage and said he might be over firing the stove. We both inspected the stove and there are no signs of wrapping in the fire box. Now the questions, what do you folks think is going on and has this happen to anyone else?
Thanks,
Chris

I'm wondering if his thermometer is reading wrong. 650 flue temps sound high. Our flue rarely got that hot with an interior probe thermometer. If this is single-wall, 650 surface could be 1000 °F in the flue. FWIW, Jotul recommends putting the thermometer on the Castine stove top and even says where to place it. Maybe he should get another thermometer for the stove top?

I have two different thermometers and they are at least 100 off of each other most of the time, I have seen 600 or so on my flue (dont like it) but that is the one that reads high, I suppose I will have to buy an IR testor to know for sure. For the OP, don't trust the thermometer to be correct (magnetic type).

If he's burning around 650 deg, that could very well be 700 deg at times, which is pretty hot. If it's not the heat, maybe his stove got a bum enamel coat job. You dont hear about Jotuls doing that often.

It could be, but it could be that the stove missed a portion of the prep work, or was otherwise abnormal in some way.

I see this enamel problem w/ Jotul most often with ivory stoves. I don't know why, but anything larger than the #3 always seems to get some unexplained chipping when in the ivory finish. The other colors seem immune to it, however.
