Hey guys

For those of you who remember, I have an Osburn 2300 that smells for the first 1 hr after light up. Nothing has been done by the distributor, installer or company to solve the problem. Therefore, I am getting rid of it. I thinK I may have found a buyer who wants to put it into his garage or cottage.

Here's my situation: the stove is in the basement. I want to be able to heat 75% of the basement and most of the upstairs. My house (per floor) is 1250 sq feet. It's a bungalow. Therefore, I need to be able to heat approximately 2000 sq feet. My chimney is a class A which is outside so the draft is not that great.

I am looking for something that can burn for long times (overnight). I will be using the stove 75% of the time.

I would like something that has a bypass damper or a stove with side loading options (I don't always have the strongest draft and would like to help prevent smoke roll out). I have ample clearance each side of the stove location as well as behind it.

Steel or cast iron, makes no difference. I am looking around the $2500 range (Canadian $$).

Please give me your advice/suggestions!

Thanks again

Andrew

Sorry to hear about the Osburn, must of just got a lemon. As far as stoves go, there are so many good ones out there but for your square footage and Northern climate I'd take a serious look at the big Blaze King.

Blaze King eh? Any other front runners?
I doubt many people are gonna check this posting, it's "off season". LOL.

I will read up on the Blaze King
Thanks!

Andrew

Was the Osburn giving you enough heat? The site says it could give off up to 85K btu. Since the stove is in the basement have you looked at wood furnaces?

Eaten,

I was very satisfied by the heat output of the stove. I had NO problems heating with it. I simply had problems with smells coming from the stove for the first hour, from the stove top. It's not normal. I have posted several posts concerning this and have tried everything possible. I am sure I have a bad batch of paint but the company won't do anything about it. It's a defect, plain and simple (from what I can see). I even contacted the Better Business Bureau about it all.

I simply want my stove to heat my basement and part of upstairs. Electricity is very cheap where I live, therefore, the stove is a secondary heat unit.

Thanks for the feedback!

Andrew

Sorry this stove has turned out to be such a hassle for you. I would look at the Canadian made Napoleon 1900, Pacific Energy Summit or the Drolet Legend. Or, if there is a Lopi or Avalon dealer nearby, maybe the Liberty/Olympic?

Check out the Hearthstone Mansfield.Put a pipe damper in if your draft is strong.

I would put the Summit at the top of your list. A convective stove should help you get more heat upstairs.

Thanks for the replies guys.

BeGreen: thanks for your kind words. I am sorry as well that the damn stove gave me a great deal of problems.

Do these stoves have bypass dampers or side loading options? I am trying to avoid smoke coming out into the room when reloading..I don't have that strong of a draft.

I wish I could get a Lopi Liberty: they are not available in Canada yet. I received that information directly from the company itself.

No the Summit does not, I wish they did just for start up but I am doing better on that now, no smoke in the house what so ever but I think I have a good draft, with out a good draft the Summit might be a real PITA to get started.

No, they are all front loaders with deep fireboxes. Maybe this is a good time to address the weak draft too so that you can get the stove you want?

Long burns from the basement, I would agree with a BK. You'll need an 8" flue for the huge king model but 6" for the large princess model. The BKs are the only ones with thermostats so you don't need to fiddle with the air control.

Too bad about the osburn not working out.

Hi Swedishchef.

Good to know that your bad stove issue is nearly over. I guess the BBB is not what it use to be back in the day when reputation meant something.
When I looked at stoves in BC Canada the Regency was the only one that did not have a weakness, other more expensive stoves had either weak latch mechanisms or light weight combustion chamber materials. I purchased the Regency M2400 to heat a 3500 SF tri level, it worked great with a 1000 cfm fan pushing heat up stairs. I moved to the states and purchased a Harmon stove, that was a disaster, traded it for another Regency M2400. To avoid smoke roll out I open the door a crack while I gather the next load of wood, this eliminates the problem. The only downside to the Regency is bending way down there to load- this summer I may rearrange the stove pipe so I can raise the stove about a foot off the floor.
My neighbour in BC had an older Blaze king with thermostatic air control, it smoked 24/7.
I do wish I had the largest Regency so I could get longer burn times. The M2400 burns for 8 hours with tamarack or red fir, 10 to 12 hours with oak, not much oak out here though.
Good luck
Grateful

It might be worth the drive south to pick up Lopi Liberty with the bypass damper??

Jotul Oslo like mine does have side loading, as does the larger Firelight. No bypass dampers, though. I don't have super strong draft either, but I wouldn't say it's really weak. Maybe someone else here can comment on how the big Jotuls do with weak draft when side loading.

side load no problems: the smoke is travelling (generally) forward and around the baffle, not to the side. The front doors will give you some if the draft is weak, however.
