I am new at this and I have read all the post about pricing. Last year I didn't even buy pellets due to price and being unemployed. So I have been looking at the spring pricing. I noticed it has come down from where it was earlier this year. I wish I had a crystal ball. I am trying to figure out is this the time to buy or should I wait?

I priced Hamer's hot ones. I can get them from Primo Pellets here in CT for $245 a ton delivered. Before delivery is $224 a ton.

Just looking for opinions. Is now the time to take the plunge and not look back or will it get even better?

Next question: Do I have them deliver now or hold till AUG.? I know last year a lot of people got burnt from other places. I really hate to fill up my garage (wood shop) and not have any room to work all summer, but I don't want to get screwed either.

My thought is to just go ahead and buy them and have them delivered now. I just hate the idea of not having my space to work in all summer. Although I would have them in my possession and not have to worry about it. Also is this a really good price considering the times?

Thanks for all the input. Like I said just looking for opinions. I am glad to have a site that is dedicated to the pellet industry. I have read lots of great information on here. It's nice to know that there is help when needed. Maybe some day I will be able to contribute back as well.

Thanks,
Tim

I agree with you...buy now, store them. Why not have them delivered, and when they put them down, put them on another pallet, cover them, and load 'em inside later this year, thusly allowing you to use your space int he meantime?

I agree...leave them outside, but get them up in the air, and cover them REALLY well till fall. If you can pick the pellets up yourself, the $224/ton for the Hamers is a really good price.....I'd jump on them now and not have to think about it anymore.

Even if the price went to $199 (and I don't think it will), your only talking about saving 50 cents a bag.

I think $245 delivered is a great price for Hamer's Hot Ones. I burned 4 tons of them in my first year and paid $245 plus delivery IIRC...

Nice pellets.

I'd advise getting them delivered now and store them inside unless you can't work around them.

I don't think prices are gonna drop much more than they have already. In fact, with fossil fuel prices on a gradual rise of late, I would not be suprised if pellets follow suit the closer we get to August/September. At our shop, the 3 brands we caryy have held steady in price: okies at 285/ton, barefoots at 285, and our sale price on Cubex dropped from 300/ ton to 260/ ton. That cubex drop won't last, as we have already been told, and I expect them to be back up to 300 before fall. Now is the time to buy for the best pellet prices, IMHO.
I would also not advise buying pellets and having the dealer hold them till the season for you: get them in and under cover, not sitting in an outdoor lot somewhere waiting for rain damage.

Another nod for buy them now and store, Spring prices are generally cheapest as a rule. $245 delivered IMO is a deal for Hamers, A really good pellet for that price!

Keep them dry as best you can! Off the ground and covered is a must.

Ditto.

Most people on this forum are tired of the prices we have paid in the last few years. Right now prices are the best they have been for awhile. Hamers delivered to me at $245. I would be all over that!

I recommend buying some pellets now but I have a feeling it will be a good year for the pellet consumer. If you do not want to bother waiting go ahead and buy now and get them in storage. You have nothing to worry about it for the summer. If you see a deal jump on it but know what you are getting first.

Do not buy any pellets that were stored outside and yes some mills and distributors do store outside. The reason I say don't is because moisture breaks down the density of pellets. Most pellets leave the mill in perfect shape but bad storage ruins pellets faster than bacon leaves the Sunday breakfast table.

Who really can tell the future. Last year the same players were telling those asking the same question to "buy now - buy now !! $300/ton is the best price you'll see this year. Hurry, Hurry" And it's not surprising that some of those replying here are dealers who've got a financial bias in getting you to buy now. Funny thing last September came and prices fell through the floor. Down to $225 ton at the big boxes. Mills were left with tons and tons of unsold pallets of pellets sitting in the yards. Dry Creek shut down for several weeks due to unsold stock.
I guess the best advice is that if you feel comfortable with the price now then buy 'em.

Hey, timinct how many tons are you looking at?

Just 3 tons.

Well, based on all the responses I guess I know what I gotta do. Time to rearrange the garage. Thanks for all the replies.

Just bought some today,2 tons NEWP delivered 496. Probably a bit high but its done, they will bring a pallet jack and place them where I want in one of my garages.
Will fill the oil tank next month then a couple cords of wood in July (for 2011 "winta") and then I am done.

I purchased 3 tons of Hamers from Primo Pellets. They use a skid steer to bring the pellets up to your garage and then a pallet jack to wheel them around inside. I was told all their pellets are stored inside the building or on the truck trailers they haul them in. If they store them, more than likely they would be in a truck trailer until needed at a later date. I took delivery and store them in my garage. I put 1.5 tons on 2 pallets to save the space of one pallet. It still takes up a good corner of my garage. CJ's is closer to you in Manchester, you could check them for a price comparison.

Just got a quote for heating oil $2.79 a gallon. Bought pellets (Northern) by Lauzon for $230 per ton pre-buy price. I have a ton from last year and bought four new tons. I paid $259 per topn last year for the same pellets.

i just got L.P for my water heater and stove at 1.89 a gal
