I have 2 dead Burr Oaks in my front yard that need to come down. They are about 14" diameter waist high, leaning towards the road and power lines and I'm too chicken to cut them myself. Local insured Arborist says he will drop them for $100 each. Sounds fair to me and I'm hoping they should supply me a little over a cord firewood.

Todd it sounds like a fair price.

zap

Definitely fair even if he is only there for a couple hours.

Leaning towards the power lines and only $200 smackers?
Sounds like a great deal to me.....being buds with an arborist can repay as well

Sounds fair to me! I have a few that I need to drop and will probably pay someone to drop them.

I could drop both including ripping in about an hour, so insurance is what your paying for it does not come cheap thats for sure. 75.00 to 100.00 bucks a tree what it would cost in my area as long as there is a drop zone leaning is no big deal it needs to be rigged up just to be sure not to hit any power line houses or anything else that come with the yard.

from what I have heard, $200 for two trees would be a good deal around here (central PA)

He's coming tomorrow, will drop and buck them, I haul away the limbs. I still have to take care of the stumps.

Yep the stump are a whole new ball game thats one reason I bought a 880 unreal how tough some of them can be just to cut them at ground level.

Todd, that seems very reasonable.

I have the same issues with 2 dying oaks here, and the price is $150 each, with the stumps left at 8 feet, and we buck it and haul the smaller branches, etc.

stumps at 8ft ? that a trunk.

Sounds good to me. Insured is key.

Todd, you would never find that low of a price around here. Go for it.

If you call the power company, would they drop them as a danger to the power lines for free?

they will in some cases where your only cutting power to your own home.

In these parts, $200 won't even get you minor trimming of one tree these days. Dropping two full size trees for $200 is a STEAL ... or so it appears to someone who has paid California prices for tree service!

Smokinjay, maybe you misunderstood me. Not drop the actual lines, but drop the trees as a danger to the power lines for free. It is cheaper for them to cut the trees on their schedule than do it in the middle of the night after a windstorm.

yes I missunderstand because here they will drop the lines for you but will not touch a tree unless its in the lines.

2 hundred bucks is a very good price. I had to have 2 very big maple tree's dropped as per my insurance co. the 1st guy to come by wanted 600 per tree! So I said BS to that and called every tree service in the book to pit them all against each other. End result was 100 bucks per tree and they even cut them into 20'' rounds for me! Man am I glad I didn't go with the 1st bid!

The power lines from the street pole to my house run through and even touch monster Norway Maple. We called Our local utility, Con Ed, and ashked them to do something about it. They came, loked and decided that they would rather leave it the way it is and come fix it if there was ever a problem.

one of those "if it ain't broke (yet), don't fix it (until its gonna cost more)".

Your power company may come out and trim the branches that threaten the power lines but may not drop the whole tree unless it looks like it's going to uproot and fall over. They do that all the time around here in our rural area when they clean out their easements - just trim the branch that's getting close to the wires. And they always leave nice rounds stacked, sometimes right along the road or fence line. The unwritten rule is that the rounds belong to the homeowner. It sucks to see those rounds sitting there forever, rotting on the ground. I've been tempted to make some mid-night, dark of the moon, five finger discount scrounging.

Steal of a deal. I paid 550 for a big pine but that included the stump too. I called everyone and by the time I got around to getting this guy out he said that he'd do it for that price but it should be in the 700 range instead. And we're in the South too! lol... anyway I took him up on his word and only paid him 550 which was about 200 less than everyone else.

you guys are killing me, we paid $1200 to have a big (tall, 3' diameter) maple dropped this winter. We got a bunch of bids from a range of companies and individuals and the best insured company dropped their bid a bit to match the others, and they bucked it up and trimmed a few other trees for us. The guy mentioned to me several times, including in a follow up call, that it was by far the cheapest they had worked all year. Tree was on the property line and we told them we didn't care what things looked like on our side but it better be spic and span on the neighbor's side - they are very clean over there. And it was. But $100 a tree?! Wow.

Heck i'd pay $200.00 for one tree. here's the tree. It's approximately 6' wide and dying of old age I presume.
