One of the features of the 2300 that helped in my decision to buy is the fact that the water jacket is realatively large at 450 gallons, which seemingly would aid in adding in solar at some point. I've been burning every day and it looks like we might be able to get 36 hours between burns if we are just using the 'on board' storage for DHW. This isn't too bad, but I'd like the convienience of some more storage as I'd like to eventually get 2-3 days between fireings. '...At some point' might be soon as I think we might have some money left over after this summers round of home improvements.

So....I'm starting to look into solar as the first step. I'd like to see what I can do with my existing 'storage' before adding in any more. Currently I'm only using one of 3 hookups on the boiler...could I just hook in solar direct to the 2300? Obviously I wouldn't want to backfeed heat out of the system so some sort of active system would likely be the best option. I MIGHT be able to get the panels/evacuated tubing installed lower than the boiler and use thermosyphoning, but I think I'll be better served by regulating the solar with an active system.

My basement has a low ceiling height of 6.5' so I'm hesitant to add storage in right away. I also have some more rehab work to do on one of the walls as the blocks are in pretty rough shape, so at this point I'd like to skip adding storage in the basement, but I AM interested in ideas for types of tanks, set-ups etc. for future reference. Basically any thoughts about additional storage for my 2300, keeping the solar in mind, would be greatly appreciated. Pressurized/unpressurized, bought/built, HX, sizing etc. etc. etc.

It depends on how much solar array (square footage) you are considering. Unless you are looking at more than maybe 90 square feet of array I think using solar to pre-heat the DHW would be the best use and return.

It's hard to do much contribution to a heating load in winter months, with a small 2- 3 collector array. You can cover a good portion, 50% or more year around with a 2 or 3 collector and 80- 120 gallons of DHW.

Large arrays for heating lend themselves to drainback systems as they have a small summertime load. Dual tanks with 3 way zone valves work nicely. Draw from the solar tank until it reaches a low temperature then switch to the wood boiler storage.

Ideally you want heat emitters that can operate at low, maybe 120F and lower temperatures to drive solar collector efficiencies.

The e-classic is unpressurized and my guess is that it then pumps the water into the house and through a platehx. From there I would guess that it transfers your DHW either through an indirect tank with a coil or through a plate hx. Adding additional storage and using that for DHW might be the best long term solution so that you can put a coil directly in the tank and not lose heat from so much transferring. You have lots of storage options from DIY open storage or refurbished propane tanks to commercially available storage. Depends on your budget...

Here is a quick cheap option you could try using the boiler as storage. Try laying a pool heater on the ground and allowing it to thermosiphon the heat into the boiler. I think Nofossil started with some sort of solar mat on the ground below his storage tank. Might allow you to space out fires and would be fun to get working...

The pool heater is neat...80k BTU. I'm around 130k with a 40 deg. Delta in the E-Classic, so that would certainly help...

No HX on my current system. My OWB is hooked directly into my Hovel combi wood-oil downstairs. The Hovel has a 37 gal. domestic tank built in, so I'm using whatever HX is inside that boiler for the DHW.
