I have been reading a LOT of posts with regards to creosote build-up, chimney fires and SS liners and have a few quick questions for Woodstock stove owners.

Given the Woodstock stoves are cat stoves, how does your chimney look between cleanings? Lots of build-up, very little or something in between? Have you had any chimney fires with your Woodstock?

Just courious.

Thanks!
Bill

Well I'm not a Woodstock owner . . . and I know Backwoods should be here shortly . . . but I know his chimney is extremely clean . . . if memory serves me correctly he has actually gone several years between cleanings . . . although he inspects it regularly . . . again proving that seasoned wood + proper operating temps = clean burning.

I get about a quart of dry sooty powder sweeping mine twice per year. Also never get any buildup on the cap. No chimney fires. I burn 24/7, have a 20' 5.5" stainless flex liner and go through 3 cords per season.

When we installed our Woodstock Fireview in 2007 we also put up a new SS chimney. Our flue runs straight out the back of the stove and through the wall, then up. Our chimney is also shorter than recommended. Our wood that we've burned so far has been from 5-7 years since cutting, splitting and stacking so it is very dry. We burn mostly white ash, soft maple, cherry and elm.

We did check our chimney probably 4 times the first winter (we heat 100% with the Fireview). No problem. In the winter of 2008-2009 we checked the chimney twice. No problem. After that spring I decided to run a brush up that chimney anyway and we got about a cup of soot. There was no creosote. Just a few days ago my wife decided to check the chimney because we did not check it any time during the winter. She said it is very clean. No creosote and only a very little fly ash at the bottom of the tee.

So, we have burned our Fireview for 3 full winters now and cleaned it once and got probably a total of a cup of soot or fly ash.

Yes, we do think this stove burns very clean. However, you must have dry wood. If you burn only partially seasoned wood, it may not give the same results. Also, if you buy wood for a wood seller, get it now! They will say the wood is seasoned but unless you've burned wood for a time it is difficult to tell and most sellers do not have very dry wood at all no matter what they tell you.

Thanks for your vote of confidence Jake.

I have a fireview after 3 seasons of burning WELL seasoned hardwood I finally cleaned the chimney got about a quart and a half of fine creosote from it !
