Northern MI - in the mitten
FINALLY got to finish this tree (well, most of it) two days ago.
It went down in a storm a year ago January. I might get about 1/6 cord, but it should be dry by the time I start burning in late September or October.
Got most of it split, and water was pouring out when the wedge hit the wood.

Can someone please enlighten me on what this tree is? I thought Spruce, but now I'm not sure.

It looks like balsam fir to me. The needles would be flat rather than radial on a spruce.

Looks good PapaDave, I'm not sure what type of pine it is but I'll be bucking and splitting my first pine this summer for 2011-2012 heating season.

It will burn by Fall but give it a year or more and it will make a world of difference. And not crap up your pipe.

But, but, it's been down over a year!! It should be nicely "seasoned" by now, shouldn't it?!
I'll take a good look at it late this fall. It's at 26% m/c right after splitting.

Thanks, I think I'm going with Spruce......final answer!

NOPE I am thinking Hemlock if thats possible in your area.

Dave, I too will agree on the spruce.

North, Hemlock indeed grows all over MI but this doesn't look like Hemlock growth. One could mistake it for balsam though.

Ok, here are a couple of pics of what I think are Spruce. These are from the front yard.

Yes, no? Can I get a definite maybe?
