Way Up North Michigan
Hi, new here. I had my Quadrafire Santa Fe installed last feburary. Like it alot. Havent used it much, but will be this coming winter season.

Starting to stock up on pellets. In my area of northern michigan I have a choice of Marth, Pro Pellets, Michigan Pellets.

There is a sale going on for the Marths at 169 a ton. I'm going to get some of those. Seeing they are a fairly good pellet.

what's that handle on the right side of the front door? Mine doesn't have that, can you share a close-up picture?

First of all, welcome to the forum....lots of nice, pellet-knowledgeable members here always ready to help if problems arise.

As for the pellets you have available, unlike Packerfan's review of Marth, I tried them and liked them a lot, and for that (great!) price, I'd be all over them. I doubt that you'll see prices much lower than that again, and I'd be buying as many tons as I could afford and store. If you want to do a split order, I'd stay with the Marth & the ProPellets.

See Jtakemans review of pellets....I think you'll see that the Marth are a pretty good pellet overall.

I did do a search of marth pellets on here. How many different " Marth " pellets are there ?? Which ones are the better ones. I ask because I thought I read something that said there are 3 different " Marth " pellets. I believe the ones I would be getting are in a brown bag and are from Wisconsin ??

Oh and that thing on the right side of the door is the door opening handle. Every year it seems they change them alittle. I have an 2010 model.

I have also seen them sold under the name "pennywise" and also "superior".

169.00 is a great price i would deal with a little more ash & fines for that price

From what I saw on the test thread, the ask amount is less than 16 oz ...showing it in the jar. Heat was at 247. And very little fines. So i think 169 for that is good.

Another question. The are all outside on pallets the pallets are covered completly with plastic. Is it true I should pick the pallet that is the shortest out of the bunch of them ??

That is a new one....never heard that before. My guess is that someone felt that any moisture that got in would make the pellets expand and rise?? I don't think that's really a valid concern, but I guess buying the shortest pallets won't hurt. Maybe someone else on the forum can chime in on this.

IMO, If the outside wrap(s) is intact and not torn at all, they should be OK.

EDIT: As for there being different "versions" of Marth pellets, I never heard that....I've only seen the brown bag.

Yeah, I dont know where I heard that, but I did about the bags on the pallets. Maybe someone else has a opinion on that ??

I learned that Marth produces at least two different pellets.
softwood and hardwood for sure.
I don't know which ones everybody here seems to like.
but I do know the brown bag hardwoods I did not like.
alot of fines and less heat. my 2 cents.

edit: it looks like jtakeman tested the brown bag hardwoods.
I've used them as shoulder season pellets and will continue if they stay cheap.

For $169 per ton that pellet would have to be horrible in order not to buy it.
what you don't realize is that you can get first rate softwoods for $25-30/ton more around here.

You should try some of our so called "shoulder season" pellets. You would probably use them for traction in the drive way when it snows.

I said it before you guys get spoiled out there with some really good pellet brands! Your prices are really nice as well. By the time we get them the freight has made them a bit expensive for us here on the east coast!

What are the best hardwoods you see out there??

Edit: To East coast! sorry.

IIRC marth is the only hardwod my dealer handles.
way prefer softwood and doug fir.

Doug fir is a hard pellet to top! Only hardwood that comes close would be 100% Oak.

I wish I could get douglas fir around here..

If at all possible, try a couple bags of them first. They sound like they could be standard grade pellets. Having a couple tons of bummer pellets that keep bridging the auger is a nightmare. Personally, I'd spend a bit more for good premium pellets so that your first season is a really pleasant one. Then you can try a couple bags of cheaper brands in the winter as an experiment, but not be committed to months of using them.
