Cranes checking it out. making sure it's drying out OK.
Don't think they were impressed by the neatness of the stacks though.

What type of birds are those Dave . . . some type of crane?
 
Sandhill cranes or the look a likes?
 
I think Sandhill cranes.
Lots migrate to Alaska, very cool birds.
For a awkward looking bird, they fly exceptionally well.

Very similar looking to the blue herons we have around here that stalk the shallow ponds and creeks for food. My question is why are those birds by the gravel bed? Any bugs or flies hatching in there?
 
my all time favorite bird. got lots of them in the river and marsh where I live

No "duck stamp" needed for them here either.
Not that I'd want to eat one. Very cool tough looking birds.
