anybody with recent ( last season) experience with o'malley pellets? i've pretty much burned softwood pellets exclusively in my breckwell big e, with good results.
i can get o'malleys for $219/ton, so the price is right for sure.

it's too hot to test burning at this point...

thanks-
tim

I burned some last season and picked up a few more newer batch bags towards the end of the season. They burned decent but had a bit more ash than I would have liked. I would not fill my whole stash with them but they will due in the shoulder seasons. You will need to clean a bit more though!

What else you got locally and prices??

Jay you are being very kind....your tests put them at .75% ash ...well above average and most people would consider this a high ash content pellet. Price is right...but for a reason too.

I keep forgetting we all don't have multifuelers that handle the more than usual ash pellets. But I have burned far worse than the O' malleys. The last batch I burned had a lower ash content than the test batch. Still more than I would have liked.

o'malley's - 219
energex canadian - 229
okanagan - 239
spruce pointe - 249
eagle valley - 257
turman - 259
lg's - 269
armstrong - 270

my top choices purely based on heat and ash would be armstrong, then okanagan. armstrong was the hottest pellet i tested. factoring cost in, i'd likely go with okanagan, but was considering o'malley's as a shoulder season pellet. i guess based on your assesment it's probably not worth it for the difference of only $20/ton, considering the ash % is twice the okanagans... and my big e is without an ashpan...

i was looking for your pellet testing posts, and only found a single review of treecycle pellets. where'd the others go?

thanks for your feedback-
tim

Based on what I know from Jay's testing, I'd be all over these two pellets at those prices. Get some of the Energex for the shoulder seasons, and the Okies for the cold weather months.

Another #1 vote for the Okies. Good hot, clean pellets there.

Second choice is the Energex Ca's. (Mostly because of there price, But 3 and 4 due burn cleaner and have more heat IMHO. Hard to call these shoulder pellets)

3=spruce pointe(Nice hot softwood and they also burn very clean!)

4=turman(Nice hot Oak pellet. Very consistent year after year! These pellets are made from in house by product fiber. It gives them an edge!)

5= Omalley's (hard to pass on the price of them, But you will clean more. VERY Easy to call these shoulder pellets!)

I can't comment on the rest as I haven't burned them in a few years. But the Armstrongs were a very nice pellet when I could get them. There fiber source is solid, Because it comes from there own scraps.

Prices aren't bad and you got a few good ones to choose from. Options are good to have!

Hey Jay, What about Cubex it wins over Oakes hands down in your tests that's my opion.

Cubex is just about, if not THE best pellet we can get here on the East coast, IMO. I'd put them up against ANY pellet.....even the west coast softwoods like Bear Mtn, etc.

The #1 vote was for what the OP had available in his area.

I too picked the Cubex for myself. What made me choose was the price of the Cubex at $235/ton. Okies are a bit more at $250/ton. I always have to weigh the dollar into it. Both did really well and I would have no issue burning either brands.

My personal overall #1 pellet is no longer available in my area! It was a Douglas fir pellet from out west. For now I try to balance heat, ash and price. So this years #1 is the Cubex. Next year who knows?? Maybe I will find those magic pellets that are super cheap and hot as the dickens. Heat my whole house on 2 tons for the season. hehe

I think the cubies would do very well against the fir pellets I burned. But I would really like to test them heads up in the same stove. But them doug firs are hotttttt!

i burned almost 4 tons of okanagan last season, and was happy with the heat output and the ash, but was looking at other options just to see if i could save a few bucks.

i picked up a couple bags of the energex, and they were really dark in color. i had read things on these forums about people having bad experience with these darker energex pellets, and not having a chance to burn them i was concerned about buying a few tons...

the other 3 you mention i've got never tried....

so i ended up ordering 3 pallets of okanagan today. @ $239/ton it's really hard to beat and/or justify anything else.

I was told by a pro pellet fellow that color doesn't mean much. There are several species of wood that are dark in color naturally. Wood will also darken with age. I burned a few that were dark and they did well, Some didn't.
