I am in the process of buying a new wood stove right now i have a 25 year old earth stove which still works great and heats my 1800 sq ft log house but I think its about time for an update.I am currently looking at the dutchwest 2479 and the blaze king princess 1006 parlor.I love the looks of the dutchwest 2479 but have read many negative reviews on the stove. My question is the everburn system.lets suppose that you do not get the so called secondary burn will it still produce enough heat to satisfy my needs for heating the house.I know they have made some improvements on the stove like encasing the side loading door with a plate to cover up the refractory so it wont crack in case you shut the door on a piece of wood that is a little to long for the stove. The dutchwest is cheaper than the blaze king and so far I have not read any negative comments on the blaze king only praise. You guys have any thoughts.I plan on making a purchase in the next couple of weeks.Thanks.

travler, I have a 2479. Yes, the everburn system is quite finicky. I do however get plenty of heat from the stove when the everburn system does not engage.

There is a guy on this site that has a great series of vidieos on the this situation, he goes by the name tradergordon I believe, do a search here, a lot of info here.

Agreed, between the two I'd be leaning heavily towards the BK Princess. If cost is the issue, there are several other stoves in between these models that will perform well.

The Blaze King is an exceptional 24/7 heater.

If I had locked myself into only buying these two makes and models I would go with the Blaze King . . . lots of happy owners here reporting some fantastic burn times . . . but man, they are pretty darned ugly looking . . . of course woodstoves are supposed to be functional . . . not furniture, right?

There are many reasons for buying a wood stove. After four years of misery with a beautiful piece of furniture, it became clear that ours was to heat our house. When we were visiting showrooms and reading brochures 5 years ago, we assumed they all did that.

Between the two, I'd go with the Blaze King and I'm not even a fan of the looks of the Blaze King. But, if those are my two choices, I'd rather buy a stove that I know will work, rather than a stove that I hope will work.

That's because you did such a nice job on the surrounding setting. Now get that blue painter's tape off the countertop!

Beautiful looking home! Did you see that Wall of Flame deal at blazeking's web site. You can email pictures of your installation in your home and they then send out free prizes. I just forget to get a picture all the time.

Out west, we love the Blaze King's and cast iron stoves are not as popular.

Good looking installation!

I have owned both (well, insert version of BK), and there is no comparison. If given the choice of either buying the BK or being given the DW for free, I'd buy the BK.

Thanks guys for all the input.I have decided against the DW just to many issues. The blaze king is still tops in my list but their is one more stove I have been looking at and that is the hearthstone mansfield.Money really isn't really an issue because you get what you pay for.I just want a stove that is simple to operate, has great reliability, and performance, looks are a little important also. From what I have read in these forums the mansfield seems like a great stove.I have one concern and that is the stones cracking.I know they are prone to having small hairline cracks but what about complete cracks causing the stove to stop being air tight.I talked to a dealer the other day and he said they are good stoves but also said that they are just a cast iron frame with stone encasing the frame. Is that correct. Thanks again for all the input

I have the Blaze King and the Mansfield.Fine stoves both. The Mansfield heats very well giving me 12hrs. of heat with a pipe damper installed. The Mansfield doesn't heat as long as the Blaze King however 12hrs. of heat I can live with.I've had no problem with cracked stones and those that do were probably careless operators.Go to the Hearthstone site and read up on the stove.

Rich, good summary. Between the BK and the Mansfield, which works best when pushed hard for heat? IIRC, most of the Hearthstone issues are when one gets it too hot. Is that correct?

I'm working with the Blaze King King which replaced a woodstock fireview which was too small for the area needing heat. The Mansfield is in the basement keeping it toasty and my pipes from freezing.I've never pushed the Mansfield too hard.It does the job without needing to.The King is heating an enclosed porch part of the first floor, the second and third floor. The Mansfield is heating the cellar and the back portion of the first floor.I only run both stoves at the same time when the temps hit low teens and below otherwise the king does all the work.It would be interesting to see how the stoves would function if the Mansfield was on the first floor and the King was in the cellar.Probably be about the same in heat.As is the mansfield turns the cellar into a suana so I open the cellar door and let some of that heat run up the steps to the kitchen in the back of the house.

Which did you purchase first, the Mannsfield or the BK Princess? Was one purchased becasue the other could not do the job alone? Perhaps you just have a large home?
Some time ago my uncle the plumber said "you got that wood stove running on your porch keeping your furnace from coming on,don't let your pipes freeze in the cellar for lack of heat".So afterwards I put a stove in the cellar to prevent any frozen pipe issues.First stove was a woodstock classic which was too small so I moved up to the hearthstone mansfield which is just right.Ya I'm heating four floors including the cellar so I do need two stoves.I've had some cellulous blown in the walls however the house is still drafty so I'm in the process of pulling down the siding and putting up sheet insulation on the outside and then re-install the siding over it.The house is better as far as drafts go but not good enough for me.I have the Blaze King King not the Princess and the Mansfield was purchased first,

Well said! :)

It is a shame that VC doesn't just go back to making wood stoves that work. They know how. They did it for thirty years. They don't need to be different. They look great. Now they need to get back to looking great and working. It ain't rocket surgery. I stayed away from them in the early eighties not because they didn't get it done, I stayed away because they were a freakin cult. If you didn't pay out the butt for a VC you just weren't burning right.

Yeah, right.

If ya want a cast iron stove, which I can't imagine why anybody would, get a Jotul. Want a steel stove and don't mind it looking like a Porta-Potty, get a BK. Want a stove for around a grand that will heat hell and half of Georgia, look at my sig.

But this year on hearth.com you are absolutely required to buy a Woodstock Fireview or a Blaze King. Last year it was the Englander 30, kinda like that I was the first one here to buy it, or the the year before it was the PE Summit.

Personally I think the Hearthstone Mansfield would kick any our stoves butts.

I know why you let the King do the work. No matter what time of year, fill the stove, set the tstat/blowers if required and forget about it.
