From Craigslist - "selling my makita dcs6401 chainsaw it runs very good has low hours as well as a 20" bar and new chain".

I looked at it, it ran great, looked pretty new - not beat up. If the compression test is good, is this a good deal?

Yep thats a good deal....

I don't know how you can say it's a good deal cuz there's no mention of price.

Run, don't walk or it will be gone.

Isn't that one of the saws you can up the displacement with just a new cyl and piston.

I've seen other saws for sale with low hours and a new chain....I've always wondered why it has a new chain if it has low hours?

new chain to some is they had it sharpen at the dealer...But if you turn a saw over look at the wear there and it will tell a pretty good story on how much its been handle..If there is any touch up paint work walk away!

yep upgrade it all the way to a 84cc not bad for 325.00 saw bb kit around 125.00 bucks. 450 total if you can do the work, and 84cc's

Buy it if it looks good.

As for the upgrade, I wouldn't do it just because. The 64cc runs pretty good. I squeaked the piston, so I had to. There is a noticable power difference, but I don't know if it's $185 worth (I bought Dolmar parts). Funny thing is, my dealer couldn't even get me a price for 64cc p&c.

Talked him down to $300.00. (hope the $ helps. :)
Lots of power, way more than my other saws. Ordered 2 new full chisel chains from baileys today just to get the most out of the saw.

Now that sounds like a good deal! Not as cheap as some of the HD rental sell-offs but then it was probably less used and better cared for than a rental.

Plenty of CCs and if you want a project, can big bore it for not that much $.

I used it today for a few hours (it was over 90 out, normally I ignore the woodpile in this heat - but's the saw is new to me), mostly to noodle a giant maple that has been sitting in the wood lot for over a month. Even though it has safety chain, which I sharpened, the Makita cut great! I got the Stihl 290 out (full chisel chain) just to compare, the 6401 cut circles around it. It's true - there is no substitute for horsepower. I was wondering if the saw being heavier would bother me, but I really didn't notice it - in fact because the saw seemed to do more of the work, I found it easier to cut with the Makita than the Stihl - at least today.

I'll try and get the camera out tomorrow.

Darn sure two differnt saws there and you really cant compare those two saws in the same sentance! I will take horespower over weight any day 2lbs isnt crap on the right saw.

Your right, and as a satisfied Stihl user I did not mean to say the Makita as a superior brand, just that there is no substitute for horsepower, 50cc's cannot compete with 64cc's. If someone wants to loan me their Stihl 391 (64cc) for next winter I'll be glad use it and let you know how it compares to my Makita! :cheese:

Ja, I moved up from a 55cc to a 65cc saw over 30 years ago. I would like to get a modern high RPM 65cc or bigger saw before I die. The Stihl dealer here is a jerk and the nearest Dolmar dealer is a 4 hour drive, round trip. HD in Canada does not sell Makita either.
