"All species of wood have a similar heat (Btu) content on a per pound basis when completely dry. Therefore, denser woods will generally cost more and burn longer. Woods like oak, hickory, and pine will burn overnight. Aspen builds a hot fire, which helps clean the chimney."

From the Department of Energy, who seem rather enlightened for a government agency. It's now officially sanctioned to use the Pine for your overnight burns. Additionally, I've been using a brush to clean my chimney, but I'll be looking for a cord of Aspen for next year's cleaning.
 
Madrone, look no further, if you want Aspen I can help you out. But you have to come out here to get it- your call. Thanks for that link, gave me a bit of a chuckle at points. :roll:
 
I guess my question is this....

Are we to place the Aspen in the chimney to burn for the cleaning?
 
I've always thought chimneys like a good aspen fire. The oak ones burn too long... like the pine ones. Your chimney fire would last all night!

I guess I'll have to change my burning style. I'll use the pine for over night burns. But what am I going to do with all the Ash firewood I have? Will that clean the chimney too? It's not Aspen...but they both begin with the letter "A".....

I've never been able to get an overnight burn out of pine. Maybe if I soaked it water first. but that would be an overnight smolder. And I don't like cleaning the class on the Jotul.... :lol:

I get 24 hour burns out of a load of pine in milder temps. It is easy to get my hands on and saves the good stuff for when I need it.
 
Maybe depends on the species?

Southern Yellow Pine can be pretty dense -- as in needing pilot holes for nails.

I had some rough cut boards that I thought were oak, until the saw hit them.

Pine rules. Don't burn ash in your stove, it make major amounts of creosote and is completely unsafe for home heating.

P.S. The official DOE pine-ash exchange program begins today at my home in upstate New York.

I didn't read the article yet, but I have no problem listing pine as an overnight burner. I can get overnight burns with the red pine I have here in southwest Michigan at least. If I load up the NC30 with pure red pine I can get a decently long secondary burn and coals left over in the morning. I do not find the pine hard to control or prone to overfiring as some reading on these forums seems to suggest. For me, the difference between red pine and red oak/mulberry/hickory is good enough coals after 8 hours with the pine or after 12 hours with the hardwood(s). Last year I burned red pine almost exclusively from the first week of October to early December and there were quite few spells of 24/7 in that time frame with me sleeping 7 to 8 hours at night and working all day. After working all day I would have to dig around the ashes for hot coals and nurse a little kindling fire to get things going again though :)

AP - your vase is very nice work, but I may have to start a petition to bring your old avatar back. After 3 years on this site, I still smile everytime I see it.
 
It's at Canterbury Hill Studio & Gallery Gallery Square 211 Main St./Rt 16A Jackson, NH 03846. That's just north of N. Conway. The vase is similar on both sides.

It's supposed to have that look that Batten alludes to- I was inspired by the scene in Slaughterhouse Five where Paul Lazzaro contemplates kicking the pathetic and (maybe this is my interpretation) scrawny Billy in the spine and paralyzing him.

Cool. I spent several weeks in the Tamworth area a few years ago, and I just loved going up to Conway to visit the shops and galleries. In fact, I love the whole area, and I'd love to move there to "live free or die" if a certain little woman was up for it.
 
Always question any government document. I've never seen anyone who could screw up more than a government agency.
 
Have done the Kancamangus several times and the last time was as a passenger in a van, not the driver.
Quite a perspective change just three feet can make.
 
Hmmmm DOE recommends pine for burning...

Wonder how long before Govt healthcare will be reimbursing only green pine for tongue depressors.
