I got a call from the old man about a log splitter for sale at a local garage sale for $250.00.

I immediately threw an 18" (20" in diameter) round of white ash in the bed of truck and hauled ass over to this garage sale. I asked the seller to fire her up. The engine sounded real good, so, I asked if I could test it out lol!

I grabbed my round, rolled it up the driveway, and plopped her on the splitter. The first attempt was a fail. The engine stalled out; we pulled and pulled on this damn cord about 20 times before she fired up again. Turns out the gas in the tank was 3 years old and smelled like varnish!! I fiddled with the mixture screw on the carb and got it running at full rpm. On the second try, she ripped right threw it! I made an offer for $200 and he accepted it!

Can't beat the price. Clean 'er out and have at it. Should end up being one of the best "bang for your buck" tool deals you'll ever come across. Have fun with it, take care of it, and be careful. Rick

Oh yeah...buy the "Old Man" a case or a bottle or whatever he prefers.

Garage sales, good find. Let her rip.

Looks pretty cool, price is AWESOME!

Beats the hell out of a maul don't it? Me and my wood cutting neighbor agreed twenty years ago that you don't work any less when you have a splitter but you get a heck of a lot more done.

Sweet deal. How well does the 2 tube setup work? Any flex in the system with the bigger rounds?

That was probably a good buy but testing it wish ash is not much of a test. You can split ash with an axe pretty easy. Throw some tough wood at it and see how it handles it.

I haven't noticed an "flexing" but the engine will stall out if I try to split a real knotty round. I doubt it would split hickory or any other really tough woods. 90% of my wood is ash though, and it does the job; I can't complain for $200 :)

Your favorite piece of Ash was not the best one to use. :cheese:

It took me 2 months (mainly weekends) to split 4 cords with a maul last winter (best time for splitting by hand IMHO). It would be 20 degrees outside and I could strip down to a t-shirt and stay warm. Now I'm going to freeze my ass off :)

True, but I already talked him down to $200 and I'm happy with it. I still have my maul, sledge hammer, and wedges for the knotty ones. I'll save these for the really cold days :)

I'm just making a silly joke, I would have bought in a heart beat.
