I waited too long (for various reasons) to get my pellets and now I'm forced to deal with high prices and expensive delivery. I do not have a truck nor do I have access to one. None of my 3 neighbors who have pellet stoves want to go in on a deal together. So now I have to get my 2-3 tons and pay through the nose...ugh.

So I'm thinking of going with woodpellets.com because I did business w/ them last year and they were very prompt on delivery etc. (I got Granules which I'm not that impressed with, but they got me through the winter). But, last year they had a delivery special--$35 for any number of tons (I got 3 tons or thereabouts). This year it's going to cost $64 for delivery (ouch) but I don't have a choice..the local places are charging that much or more for delivery. I'll also probably go with Cleanfire Hardwood ($249/ton) ...because it's middle of the road price and seems to have relatively high btu output. (They only offer 4 brands in my area.)

So does anyone have a promo code I can punch in and save a little bit when I place my online order?

how far out in western mass are you? you might want to try squier lumber, they're in monson, mass. i'm ~40 miles from them, and charged $75 for delivery of 4 tons. have great luck dealing with them for 2 years now, & their prices are very reasonable ( in our area) for some great pellets imo...

I'm 37 miles from them. Your post surprises me. Because I did email them a few weeks ago and they said they were caught up with delivery...but they said they'd come to my town (montague) only with a 14-skid truckload! ($120 delivery for that, which is great, but um, I can't use14 skids of pellets). At the time they gave me that price I tried to get my neighbors to go in on a truckload but no one would. So I gave up because Squier didn't seem to be willing or able to bring just 2-4 tons. Now you say you got 4 tons and you live as far away as I do. Well I'd rather go with them. When did you buy? Maybe I'll give them a call and try to get them to deliver, since now I know they did so for someone else!

Thanks for your reply!

i'm basically in worcester, so perhaps they're able to bring a 14-skid truckload in ( to the worcester area) and bundle deliveries in neighboring towns, vs. going out to montague just with your order. i don't know...

i took delivery in june.

Well, I just bought 3.9 tons of Okie's ($239/ton) for $80 delivery from Squier. He said they normally go to Leverett and Sunderland for $75 (that must be why I got $5 more tacked on, I'm right up the road from Leverett). They'll deliver in about 2-3 weeks which is perfect.

Considering the better pellets I'll be getting at a lower price, I'm happy with this (and am ok with the delivery charge). I don't need 4 tons but that's the least he would bring out. As long as I can make room in the garage for them, though, I'll be quite pleased, because I probably won't need to buy pellets next year, YAY! (I only burned about 2 tons last year, and it was Granules LG which I didn't like very much.)

Thanks again for your input, w/out it it's very unlikely I would have called them.

by the way, what brand did you get and how much did you pay per ton, if you don't mind my asking?

glad it worked out for you. pretty much the same deal, 3.9 tons of okies, but $75 delivery.

i burned LGs my first season, and found the okies burn hotter and cleaner in my stove. and even with the higher delivery fee from squier, it's still less than what i'd be paying for pellets closer to home.

altogether I'm paying $259.50/ton which is a lot more than I thought I'd be paying for pellets this year but that's what I get for waiting too long and for not having a truck to pick up my own pellets!

I sure hope Okies are as great as everyone says, in my Harman.

Call them and ask for a break on the delivery. I did just that as a 3 year customer and they knocked $30 off the delivery charge.

I'm a new customer, and I spoke with Kevin for a while getting the whole thing set up...so I don't think I can call back and say "oh wait, can you knock off some of the delivery charge??" I think I'd better wait until I"m an established customer before trying that.

Also, how many miles from them do you live? I live 40 miles (an hour each way) away.

You do not need them today. Ask them to bundle them with another customer who is yet to call in...do you think that you are the only one? Tell them you will pay 1/2 up front and they can wait until the time is right. They are good company to deal with.Post on craigslist community forum and see if there are any takers to share the delivery charge. The Amherst area is a hotbed on CL.

c'mon BTU hook him up with a dealer!

BTU kept trying to get me to go with Squier lumber. I told him at first they only wanted to send a 14-skid truckload to my address. Then I read here that someone got 4 tons delivered to a 40 mi distant address; hence I called back. Kevin at Squier said they deliver to neighboring towns Leverett and Sunderland(or Shutesbury) and I think it's $75 for those towns. I'm not sure why I got charged an extra $5 when I'm right in the same area (and I live on the main road). I'm quite sure he said he was gonna deliver mine when he had others in the Lev area...so yea, why can't the delivery charge be divided up. It really doesn't cost $80 to bring 4 tons out. But I am just not sure if I should call back and push it. By the way I am a she not a he. Would be nice if BTU could help me out with the delivery charge but I don't expect anyone to help me out with this. Unfortunately.

ask for Chad....tell 'em to give you the 2nd week in Aug Okie special pricing deal. (Don't know if they have one, but it's worth asking)

And if I call and get a better deal there, is it cool to cancel my order with Squier? I haven't paid yet but is that bad practice? Or do I try to get Squier to match AFS's deal?

Go with the economy which is closets to you first, there is better chance that your money will return to you.

Absolutely no apology needed, just wanted to make it known. Seems rather obvious doesn't it, as I"m so wimpy about this pellet haggling thing. sigh... lol

FULL DISCLOSURE TIME....BTU has NOTHING to do with what a dealer either 1. Sets their selling price at or 2. Sets what if any charge the dealer adds on to deliver of the pellets to their customers.

In defense of any dealer that will deliver there are costs involved. If the dealer has any sort of heavy duty diesel truck involved and if that truck carries some sort of forklift on the end of it to put those pallets exactly where you have it, I bet that rig new costs in excess of $100,000. The truck probably only gets 5 miles to the gallon and I'm betting that the driver doesn't work for free...plus in most cases, the truck will return to the yard empty. I realize it can sometimes be hard to get 5 or 6 people to agree on the same thing, but I would highly encourage anyone to get together with their neigbours and have all their season's pellets delivered from the same dealer, all at the same time. If he can haul 14 to 24 tons on one load ...going to basically the same area, there is no doubt most will crack you a deal to do so....the trucking whether it's from my warehouse to the dealer or the dealer to the end customers is somewhat of a pain and part of the business. I LOVE it when a dealer comes to my warehouse and picks up his own load and saves me the hassle of having to deliver it, but not everyone is set up to do that, just like not everyone can pick up their 1-4 tons they need for the winter at their house.

Always ask if they have a volume discount. Many dealers will actually give a good deal if you buy 3,4, 5 or more tons at once ...sometimes it's offered and sometimes you might need to ask, but you never know till you ask....thanks for your support and I know you will love those Okies this winter.

ok ok ok ok. That's the same spiel I got from the guy at Squier about delivery costs for the vendor and I never said I wanted pellets delivered for FREE or for $20 or even $30 but to me $80 seems excessive but what the heck I'm paying $239/ton for okie's so it evens out ok.
Just doing what everyone else does and trying to get the "best deal for the best price."

End of discussion.

There is nothing wrong with that! I never commit with anyone till I have exhausted my search. Your the one paying and its your right to go with the best deal you can find. I would call who BTU recommends and ask, If they are cheapier call Squire and say. I found a better deal. He probably will not cry about it. If he askes, Tell him the exact deal. Maybe he will counter offer?? But most of all get the best deal for you. There is still time, Don't feel like you need to rush into a deal. Thats when you get cornered. You should be able to cancel the order at any time(unless the truck is heading your way)! But 1st things first call the other dealer. You might get a cheaper deal or maybe they want more???

And the biggest thing is DON"T let that big bully BTU pick on you! (jk sorry BTU just had to! :p )

Yea I will call Amherst and see what their price is, and delivery cost is, but they're probably more expensive. I've been burning pellets 10+ years, always in this area, and never went with Amherst because their prices are always relatively high (when I even remember to call them).

Frankly I just get tired of the whole schtick and just want my garage full of pellets, ready for winter. To save $20 here or there isn't really worth the angst, after a while.

thanks for the support, guys.

That's the ticket Jay, don't let BTU get away with anything after all he is very mean to us Bears as he won't allow any of the drivers to lose a couple bags going by the end of my driveway ;-) .

Glad you are going with squires for now. They are a a great local family owned business one of the last few in the area. Been buying from them for 4+ years now haven't had a bad experience yet!

We tier the cost of delivery and a 4 ton load it costs $80 over the pick up cost for the delivery. It is not that bad when you think per ton, $20 over pick up price per ton. I used $20 after making trips and looking at fuel cost and time to load and unload. I also set the driving distance at 35 mile radius with that price after researching fuel and drive time.
