I went and looked at a PE Super 27 today at a local dealer and was very impressed with it. The difference between PE and the box store stoves was immediate right away and with the $300 discount that PE is doing plus 30% tax credit, now may be the time to buy. They had a T5 hooked up and lit a fire in it to demonstrate how the Super 27 works since they have the same firebox. This is going to be a huge upgrade over my little CFM stove.

There is another dealer that has a Lopi Republic 1750 for about the same price that I haven't looked at but really I liked the PE. Can anyone who has the PE stove share their opinion of it with me?

Thanks

There a lots of posts here on the mid-sized PE stoves. They may be the best models that PE makes. Our next door neighbor has had the Spectrum for about 5 years now and has nothing but praise for the stove. It has an exceptionally long burn time and very low maintenance. The stove will burn fine on just a couple splits, but also loves to have it's belly filled and just cruise.

I am running an alderlea t5 and love It. This will be my first full season with it. It is extremely easy to run. It provides very impressive burn times. The secondary burn is awesome to watch. It is very easy to operate and offers a lot of adjustment. As with most newer stoves you MUST have dry wood. Although my brother in law has a lopi and it works very well too. I really don't think you can go wrong with either pe or lopi.

Thanks for the input. I went to check out an Englander 30 but they didn't have any at Home Depot. I wish the Englander had the door handle on the left instead of right. For some reason when the handle is on the right (door opens to the left) it just looks backwards to me, maybe because I'm right handed.

You have company there. Some of us actually like the handle on the left side of the door. But then again, some do not. The 30NC is a larger stove than the PE Super27. It is more similar in size to the Summit. Do you need this large a stove? If not, the Englander 13NC is the size of the Super27.

I think the 13 is smaller than the Super 27, maybe a 1.5 cu ft fire box? Nope, just looked it up and it's 1.8. It sure looked smaller than my Keystone when I saw it at Farm & Fleet the other day.

The 13NC firebox is a bit smaller and shallower than the PE. I like the deeper firebox. That's an important difference for N/S burning.

Yeah the 13 is smaller for sure, the 27 is 2 or 2.1 cft I believe. The Super 27 is also nice and deep for easy N/S loading. My current stove is small and loads E/W which means you have to get the wood in there just right and some times it rolls out.

I would consider a 30nc because it's seems to be a tremendous value at it's price point.

On the topic of the door handle. I know that on my T5 it allows you to switch the door handle side. I'm not sure about the super 27 but I would guess it would.

Can you do that at any time or do you have to order it with a door that has the handle on the correct side, the right :cheese: , or can you change it at any time?

Only the Alderlea models can be special ordered with the handle on the right, and they're NOT field-convertible. The original literature implied that this could be done, so in the early Alderlea days we sold a standard left-handled model to a customer who couldn't decide, with the agreement that we'd convert it to right-handled if she found she'd rather have it that way. Turned out she'd rather have it that way. Middle of the burning season, sole source of heat, so we promised her same-day service. It took 4 guys and a dog all afternoon. And then, the handle wouldn't switch over, so we had to order a right-side handle, which took just as long as it would have to have ordered the right-handled stove in the first place.

The Alderlea T5 has the same firebox as the Super 27, and can be special ordered with the handle on the right for folks like Brother Bart, whose drains swirl counter-clockwise. Note that only the metallic black painted version can be ordered this way: the option has not been popular, and is not available on the new porcelain models.

I'm a left-hand handle guy and like the Super 27 just the way it is. I like the wood handle a lot too but wish they would have matched the primary air control lever with a wood handle as well.

I agree with you on the primary air control lever. I wish they would have put a little more effort into it. That is good info to know about the door not being "switchable." I was led to believe that it was switchable when I bought the stove as well; regardless I like the handle on the left as well.

New here so hope I do this right. I have a PE D series super 27. The below damper doesn't have any written settings on it so I don't know which way (left/right) is open. Any one know? I've looked through the manuel but it was no help.
Thanks,
chach

I assume you're talking about the primary air control lever under the ash lip? If so, on mine it's marked H and L with H being fully open all the way to the left and L being being fully closed all the way to the right.

That seems backwards compared to my summit, why would they do that?

Check again. That's the way it is on our T6. Wide open is all the way to the left.

BG you are right (how could I doubt you) and its been a long summer and I dont remember how I was starting fires now, only ran the stove for two months, change that to brain dead instead of brain fart.

Doubt away, my wife does it every day.
