Hi, I've recently emigrated from the UK to Canada and am bringing with me my Morso Squirrel 1412, which was purchased in the UK (it's currently on a ship in the Atlantic somewhere).

Anyways, I hope to have the stove installed in my house here, but apparently insurance requirements are such that, besides being properly installed, it needs to have a certification, either Warnock Hersey or ULC. I believe these are safety rather than emissions certifications like EPA.

There's a plate at the back of the stove that shows the certification. Obviously I can't see the plate right now but I doubt it would have these as they're probably North American certifications that wouldn't be affixed to a stove made in the EU.

Anybody have an idea what the equivalent of a Morso Squirrel 1412 is over here, and if it's certified?

Thanks.

It looks to be very similar to the Morso 1410 which is sold over here, but the 1410 has long legs which are optional on the 1412. It might be good to contact Morso and ask them.

Yep, I think the 1412 is the "clean-burn" version of the 1410. It has tertiary air supply which allows it to be used in smoke-control areas such as London, UK.

Anyways, I contacted Morso and they say the 1412 model is not sold in North America and hasn't gone through any laboratory testing, which pretty well means I'm out of luck.

I think my only chance now is to go direct to the certification organisations and see if they can certify it. Hopefully the 1412 has met EU certs that meet or exceed the North American ones.

I already talked to an installer (in my municipality you're not allowed to install your own stove, even if you meet the building code!) and they want to see a label affixed to the stove before they'll even touch it. In lieu of that they are willing to accept a letter from Morso stating that it's compliant.

But I just found on the main Morso site that the 1412 is EPA compliant: http://www.morsoe.com/Morsø-1412-1052.aspx.

I'd been visiting the Morso N.A. site which doesn't list the stove.

As far as emissions go the EU is now more stringent than the EPA. The safety certification is going to be the tough one to get beyond.

Yeah, I couldn't quite figure that one out. In the UK/EU the safety certification is the CE mark. What's the equivalent here?

UL in the States and CSA for Canada.

That makes sense ... my insurer wants to see a UL or Warnock-Hersey certification. I see on the UL website you can submit a product for certification, but that's mainly for manufacturers. Nevertheless, I don't see why I couldn't submit a request for a quote ... it may only be a matter of comparing standards, not necessarily testing, or even seeing, the actual product.
