Is it possible to replace a woodburning insert (Regency I1200) with a woodstove by placing stove in front of fireplace?
The insert is placed inside a ZC fireplace. Heats back room perfectly, but I'm looking to heat entire house and have overnight burns (insert has a 1.8 cu ft firebox).
Insert has SSliner and I would extend the hearth to accomodate stove.

major hearth issues-watch clearance to combustibles- more $$ but why not pull the zc and do a proper stove install with class a chimney

meaning I pull the insert out of the ZC fireplace and then run the liner up through existing chimney of the ZC fireplace.
ZC fireplace has 8 inch chimney. Insert has 6" SS liner.
I am probably talking out of my butt. I was just mislead (bottom line it was my fault) about fireplace and trying to get a stove to heat entire house.

Not many stove that are approved for this type of installation. Yes it can be done, but you may have a hard time producing documentation for inspection or insurance. We've had reports that Jotul says this is ok. But I think it still is not in print.

A lot of times these zc fireplaces are tacked onto the side of a house which is not the ideal location for good whole house heating with a freestanding stove. Is there a better location to install a stove?

The ZC fireplace is located in the center of the house. Heat would need to travel down a long hallway to reach the living room. The stove room would probably need to be around 85 or so to push the heat through the house. Mainly I just wanted a larger stove to have overnight burns.
I just don't want to rip the ZC fireplace out. It is surrounded by a marble and a mantle. What other options are there?

Can the ZC fireplace accommodate a larger insert? Do you know the opening size and depth of the ZC?

PS: Have you tried a fan on the floor at the LR end of the hallway, pointing toward the stove room? That may be a big help towards circulating the heat and preventing the stove room from getting too hot.

The opening is large enough to accomaodate the Regency I2400 but I was told it would be too heavy.

I have done the fan and it does help a bit.

Jotul approves most, if not all of their new stoves for installation through a zc fireplace, provided an acceptable liner (which you already have) and proper clearances are observed, and it is in print and readily accessible. I have a copy of the owners installation manual complete with detailed instructions on making the connection. You could call your closest Jotul dealer if you needed more information.
