I have not done any cutting or splitting in a few months, it has just been to hot.

This poplar i got from my boss. He cleared a section of his woods for his new pole building and offered me the poplar. It was the easiest wood i ever had to handle. He had it cut into 8 foot lengths for me and we used his tractor with forks to load them into my buddies dump trailer. I got two loads like this but gave the one to my buddy that i borrowed the trailer from.

This is some hickory and maple that I scored on craigslist. I have about 2 more truck loads of the hickory to get from this place. Super nice people, they said i can take all of it expect of some of smaller stuff they want for there insert. They don't have a larger saw and normally just buy their wood.

It all should be nice and dry by 2012-2013. This is the start of 2012-2013 pile. I am going to stack it tomorrow to see just how much i have.

Archer39 nice job, looks like the weather is cooling off which should make things more enjoyable, nice score.

Archer, you should be extremely happy with this wood. However, it is not popple and will serve you much better than expected if you thought this was popple. I'm surprised nobody else picked up on this. You did get more than one type of wood but when I saw that first picture I could hardly believe it. You did very well indeed.

Dennis, i am almost certain that the pile closest to garage (rounds with the saw) is poplar. I am not very good it IDing but i sat under that tree for three years eating my lunch at work and had a lot of time to look at it when it was alive. The pile near the splitter is a mix of hickory and maple.

Okay. I was thinking you meant all was popple, which it is not. I was really taken back by that first picture with the saw. I cut a lot of that stuff.

Dennis, do you think the rounds with saw are not poplar? I am not that great at identification. I will take a few close up pictures of the splits.

Here are some crappy close up pictures of a few of those splits.

A cord of it stacked. I ran out of room quicker than i thought. Now i got to trailer it to behind the garage to stack the rest.

The rest of the pile. I would have to say there is more than a cord left.

looks like a nice place there, how about a few more shots from around the yard?

Here you go. It is actually my grandmothers house. I have been taking care of it for her for the past 2 years since my grandfather passed away. She is planning on selling and moving in the near future and my wife and I are are going to buy it from her and probably rent out our current house.

Archer, no, I am certain those are not poplar. Take a look at this picture and compare it to that first picture you posted and then again at a closeup and see if you think these might be the same thing. Also, look at the rounds and compare the heart with your wood. Then tell me what you think it is.

Make sure you let that tire season a good two years before you burn it.

That is not a tire, that is the kindling wood. Rather than super cedars this takes gasoline quite well. A bit too much smoke for the cat though.

there no cat in my englander so no need to worrey :p

Your thinking it is ash right Dennis?

I can see why you say that but this stuff is very light in weight. It feels like pine in terms of weight it surely is not dense at all. my pictures really don't show the green tint it has to it. I have about 4 cords of ash put up and it sure was different than this stuff.

First, understand that I'm not worth a hoot at judging by pictures, so I certainly can be and many times have been wrong. They can be so deceiving. However, as I stated, that very first picture surely looks like ash to me. Also, ash can indeed be quite light if it is dead. I cut some last winter and was amazed how light it was where ash is usually quite heavy.

Try this: I took both pictures and put them into a software program where I could see them side-by-side. That is, the top picture of yours and the one I posted. I had someone else also look at the pictures and they also said it looks like the same wood to them.

As stated, I certainly can be wrong so let's hope someone else chimes in here too.

I'm not the best at IDing trees by their bark, but my first gut reaction before even reading Dennis' comment was that the wood looked like either ash or maple . . . or maybe the fabled "mash" wood which is what I call any wood that I know is either maple or ash, but I can't tell which. Most of the popple I see around here has pretty smooth bark for most of its life.

Any leafs to go with this tree . . . that would help in the ID.

I think the pic with the saw could easily be poplar.

Yellow poplar bark around here looks exactly like ash. The only way to tell them apart is alternate vs opposite leaves, the leaves themselves, and often the color of the wood. Yellow poplar often has a dark, almost purple colored heartwood. The thing that makes me wonder is that the dark heartwood seems absent here.

That's not to say that it isn't poplar because abnormalities often do occur.

If the op ate his lunch under it for several years and thinks it's poplar, he is likely correct. Any way you can get your hands on a twig from the tree? You could check to see if the leaves/branches are opposite or alternate.

ETA, I looked at the pic again. I say with 99% certainty that it is poplar. The large round on the far bottom left of the picture shows the dark, nearly purple heartwood. This is definitely poplar.
