Hi, I have decided to put an offer in on a house that has more privacy and land. The new house has a Heatilator fireplace as you can see in the picture. I need some options for installing something that will heat the house at 2100 sq ft. Could a Jotul Oslo be installed in front of the current fireplace if I extended the hearth with a hearth pad and run the pipe up the current flu? This house was built only 2 years ago. The is not a masonry chimney, only a pipe going up behind the wall and out the roof. Any other suggestions? Would the current Heatilator be just for looks or would it actually heat? I seem to think that it would be very inefficent.

Also, would a hearthstone homestead work here and possibly look better?
Thanks.

Hi -

I think you're on the right track.

I put a VC Resolute Acclaim in front of a masonry Chimney/Heatalator unit. I extended the hearthpad, and cut though the heatalator back (the sloped surface) so I could go straight up with the pipe.

The cost will hinge on what type of pipe is in the flue chase. If it's Class A for wod burning you may not need much to adapt.

Pay attention to the stove manuals. How far to combustables, and measure how much hight you need at the back of the stove to get the exhaust headed back to the chimney.

ATB,
Mike

I'll have to check on the type of pipe for sure. I'm sure this setup the way it is will give out some heat for the room it is in this winter, but I would like to have something more efficient put in. My wife thinks it might look strange having a stove setting out in front of the fireplace, but I think it would look fine.

I believe Lennox is owner of heatalator brand now so maybe check there sight or with them for more info on the fireplace. I also think those are a package unit which you might be able to remove by removing the surround and there by affording you a little more horz. space to back a stove into. These do pop up on Craigs List everyso often. So at this point you have some homework to do before anything else.

whoops edited out my reply . misread your square footage. I am doing the same thing. But I have half the square footage. Look up Avalon olympic.
