Hi everyone, just found this site and researching a few pellet stoves. I really like the looks of the XXV and can get the p68 for a couple hundred less so now it comes down to weather or not both of these are good choices or not? If you have one of these would you buy it again? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will be installing this in the basement with a open stairway leading up to a open floor plan in a log home with a loft and master bedroom upstairs. The previous owners used a woodburner in the same location with great results.
Thanks George

Both good stoves and should treat you well. But because your doing the basement install, I would go with the P68. You might need the extra BTU's down there when the cold sets in!

hmmm, do you use the basement? rather, do you need to have the stove look nice in the basement, or is it going to be a workhorse? I'd gravitate towards the P68 like J, unless you need to make someone happy with the pretty stove. Mechanically they are almost the same. P68, a little easier to clean IMO, an of course, it is The Big Gun, bragging rights are important.

The basement is partially finnished now, the wood is on the walls but needs the stone done in the corner where the stove will go and the ceiling done. It will be a nice bar/game room when done so looks do play a part in my choice. The main floor and small loft with bedroom come out to 1400sq ft, the basement is only 550sq ft with the rest garage so it's not a big house.

IMO both are good choices. How much space are you trying to heat?

If the P68 is cheaper with more BTUs, the only thing stopping you is the
good looks of the XXV ;-)

My XXV is installed in my basement and does a pretty good job of keeping
the first floor fairly comfortable too. I also have an open stairwell at the
top of the stairs to help the heat rise faster.

I believe they both list for $3699. The P61A is $300 cheaper.
If you want traditional styling, quiet & less heat capability (50K BTU),
go for the XXV...
If you want contemporary, less quiet & more heat capability (68K BTU),
go for the P68...
Probably the wife's call anyway, right?

The dealer has the p68 on sale for 2,999, said they bought a bunch of them. The XXV is 10% off 3,599 plus a ton of pellets so that makes them pretty even. The furniture is rustic/log and i'm not married.

But as was stated in a previous post, the fact that you will be trying to heat the upstairs from the basement would make me lean toward the P68. You may need the extra BTU's to make that work.

Remember, these are space heaters. While some people make it work, they were not meant to heat most or all of a home. Every home is different, and yours may or may not allow a good circulation of heated air to the upper floors. I think I'd rather not find out that you need the extra heat capacity after you buy and install the XXV.

Just my 2 cents

My vote would be for the P68. Someday you WILL need those extra BTU's.

driftbuster, I have experience with both of these. My P68 is in the basement and does a great job heating upstairs in a 1600 sf cape. My g/f has a XXV on the first floor of a raised ranch. That does fine for what she is heating...that one floor.

Another difference I have found beyond heat is in the cleaning. I have cleaned both (not a deep clean yet on her XXV, but that is coming in the next few weeks). The P68 is far easier to clean the firebox on a weekly cleaning. MUCH MORE ROOM inside. The XXV tends to chew up my hands a bit if not careful.

The P68 definately cranks out more heat...by design.

The XXV looks great and does not get hot to the touch. The P68 will burn your hand !!!!

Neither is a bad choice.

Good luck

Geno

If you want to have the most heat avail, go for the 68... if you need pretty, then go XXV.
