Was in HD tonite for PVC and wandered over to see what pellet brands they were carrying this year.
They have Fireside Ultra, Winter Warmth & Freedom Fuel.

Even though I have plenty for the up coming season, I picked up 2 bags of the Winter Warmth
and 2 of the Freedom Fuel to try out. Must be the pellet pig fever. ;-)

Anyhow, how can the Freedom Fuel have a Super Premium PFI stamp on their bags if there are
so many complaints here about them? What am I missing?

Tink, I've burned them, and they are not Super premium. The Winter Warmth, however, are made by Hamer's and should be a good pellet.

Do a search for the "Freedom Fuel" on the forum...you won't see much that's good said about them.

Really a Super Premium? Wow, never thought I would see that. But there it is in plain color! Had to be lots and lots of cash! :)

Honestly, I hope they are and could be from a better process? Got to keep us posted! On both brands please, I still can't find the Winter Warms. errrr!

Just wait till the pellet purest on here find out that Maine Woods has achieved "super premium" status.

Already have, Thats "old news". Just can't find the new batch here yet. But I will and rate them fairly!

I noticed the stamp when I was putting them into the truck and the first thing that came to my mind
is "no way does HD sell Super Premium". Searched the brand here when I got home and saw the negative
reviews about them so something is amiss. Hmmmmm.

Clipped from their site.

Q&A

Is Freedom Fuel a Super Premium Stove Pellet?

Freedom Fuel is, and always has been a super premium stove pellet. In order to be considered a super premium stove pellet the ash content must be below 0.5% which Freedom Fuel is. Our moisture content is also extremely low, being below 6.0%. Freedom Fuel Stove Pellets score exceptionally well in chloride levels and fines (dust levels) too.

I don't know if these are super premium or not, but I found them to burn very well!

Picked up 3 bag's at lunch, last year i bought a bag and they were from Alabama, now it says N.C., so possibly true there just Penningtons, last yr's were very small in diameter and they were all softwood.

looks like a well stuffed bag= lower density pellet. when Twin ports tests the pellets for PFI label they crush them to standardize density & then use a bomb calorimeter to evaluate heat content, this negates weather factors which home testing doesnt.

Hah" When a lab test can tell me if they will clinker in my stove? I might start to believe them! Otherwise I will test them in my stove.

When you can tell me how to comp for weather changes? I might start tracking them! Otherwise, Not gonna do it!

Not what I asked! How do you comp for it Mr. Scientist? Come on now, Really!

Opened a bag this morning, appears very very short pellets, 1/2 are lil chunks, almost on the verge of becoming fines, almost a lil bloated looking like they got damp, picked dry bags indoors, but my stove loves short pellets so should be ok, would I buy a ton or more....probabbly not, I'll stick with my $150 ton Pennington's.

Must have gotten wet. Those pellets don't look like that. The ones I burned where normal length and skinny along the entire pellet

2 things I found with the Freedom fuel pellets. 1st is the diameter is rather large at .320" 2nd is I see corn in the mix and actually found whole kernels in the bag.

I don't think we will see Super Premium ash content if there is corn in the mix. Corn has more ash content than good clean wood fiber!

I agree with smwilliamson, "I am suspect to anything that labeled FREEDOM." and would go a step further . . .

I also suspect the use of "Freedom" , and really object to using a large American flag on the bag as a means of marketing their product.

Kind of like the used car lot, with the rows of clapped out, crappy, vehicles ( foreign included) with American flags, in their cheap white plastic attaching mounts, displayed from the driver's door windows.

I do like to see a small "Made in USA" with a small flag logo, but do not like the kind of exploitation ( IMO) that Freedom Fuel uses.

My rant for the morning.

What you describe and show is completely different from the ones I burned, so they must have changed the formula.

Good point by the other poster about using the American flag to market a product.

Mark :)

I'm burning the 3 bags I bought now, there very large in size and alot of broken pieces, nothing like the Freedom fuel i bought at the same HD last yr, those were very small diameter, appeared softwood, my stove liked them and I thought the bag said made in Alabama, unlike new is made in NC
I gotta check for corn....
Stopped at HD other day and they still have the FF and 2 bag's of Stove Chow, appears made in Canada with all the french writing on the bag, would like to try some Hardwood Heat, I'll look tommorow in another store for them, prices are now $196 ton

Home depot in Concord had them for 209 a ton. Being the pellet pig that I am and finding super premiums ??? at a cheap price I bought 5 bags. Dumped the 1st bag into the stove about 5 mintes ago. I have to agree with a previous post there are a lot of small broken pieces but I saw very few fines. If my stove likes them I will pick up more the next time I'm in Concord.

I have two bags of these I bought a few days ago. I should be done with my 2 bags of Pennington's Nature's Heat by tonight (impressions to come) and ready to open the FF.

Does anyone know if the Freedom Fuel are hardwood or softwood? I can't find anything on the bag. I need to know what setting to set my Mt Vernon to with these.

My Freedom Fuel bag says "Made in NC" . The Pennington Nature's Heat bags I bought at Walmart actually say "Made in Canada".

HD says 100% Soft.........

My Stove liked them. at least this latest short Phat Pellet....

waiting to see what you guys think before i buy a ton of them..

I finished my test and they did OK for me. Heat was decent(I would like a bit more). They did come in at the Super Premium ash level. Because I have a basement install I could get by in the cold with them but I would need to increase the feed rate from 3 to 4. They did fine for the shoulders. I would burn them is the price was right! :)
