here are some pics of my hearth in progress. we started from scratch. i installed the excel ss chimney( scored on ebay, $700, complete, 24' of pipe). it will be the new home of my other score- a 10 year old, used only 3 years, Jotul 500 Oslo. we should be done next week. i have around 8-10 cord ready to go, well maybe not the oak, but we'll be burning any day now. friends of ours knew i was looking for a stove. i have all that wood, so people were wondering- i had no stove or fireplace. our friends were over one day and said we can have their stove. they can't use it because of allergies and asthma. i said no thanks because i knew what stove i wanted, wether i was getting it used or new. i figured they had an old or beat up stove, not even considering it. lo and behold, i saw some pictures of our kids at their house and saw the jotul 500 in the background. 2 days later, it was in my garage for a very fair price. they were going to give it to me, but they had no idea what they had. i felt like i was robbing them if i took it for free. we talked about it and worked it out. its in almost brand new condition. what luck! hope the pics come out ok. i used picassa. yeah, it worked.

Very nice! The wife and I both like the "field stone" look. Must've been tricky (or at least time consuming) to fit all the pieces "just so," in your puzzle. ESPECIALLY around the stove pipe outlet!

That's a really nice setup! Can't wait to see it in place.

Where did you get those stones? That's neat that they're flat on one side...must make installing much easier. The previous owners at our place did something like that, but used real rocks...and a lot of mortar in the joints.

Its called cultured stone. The model or style we used is called lakeshore river rock. Its made by owens corning. It is time consuming, but not hard to do. Thanks for the compliments. I will update as we go. We're anxious to finish.

That looks great! Nice job.

I want to do something similar with my basement install. Need to get the big hulk down in the basement first though. LOL

That field stone could make positioning/leveling the stove a little dificult. but the look is right on!.

Nope. It will sit on big pieces of bluestone. Level. Wait and see.

almost done. grout is in. what a difference that makes. bluestone is in. we just have to fill in the middle with somw rust colored bluestone and we're done. i can smell the burning wood now. i will include pics of my chimney that i installed myself, next time. i'm guessing , so far, i saved $1300 on buying the chimney, $1000 on the install, and around $1800 on the stove- at least $4000 saved. thats why i'm going all out on the hearth. enjoy!
