My favorite time of the year to cut wood is right after a couple of good hard freezes, usually October in Missouri. Gets rid of the ticks and chiggers. It is too cold in January and February. It can be too wet in March and April. It is too hot July and August. Don't get me wrong, I have cut and split alot of wood in each of those months, but my favorite month to cut is October. Can you tell that I am looking forward to getting to the woods in a couple of weeks so I can start on my 2012/2013 woodpile?

when do you guys like to cut?

Same here except I have been out the last several weeks up here because it feels like October weather. I needed to get a jump on things anyway and will be out in October and November too.

January, Feb, March........nice and cool, hunting season is closed, too early to start saltwalter fishing and I need to work off the holidays!

November/december, but thats because I prefere to skid ontop of snow. this year it was 20 cords from about june to middle of august, just cause thats when it was available. lots of sweat equity in this years harvest.

My favorite time to be in the woods period...is October- November. doesn't matter what I'm doing;p No bugs, breezy and cool, smell of earth/rotting wood, and beautiful foliage..plus you do not have to over dress to stay warm which can tire you out when you're working. needless to say, good times coming!

October/november for the same reasons you mentioned. Problem is some years we'll get snow early and then access is limited. I've been cutting for the last week or so because the temps are in the mid to low 60's. Allows a bit more clothing to keep the bugs off. Better after the first freeze for sure.

A good portion of my wood gathering is after a summer storm- damaged trees / blow down stuff in residential areas. Always seems to be 90f+ on those occasions. At least some of that is easy pickins.

October through December- until it's below maybe 20 F, and unless there's bad weather or snow pack- I love it. I like it when possible in the spring as well because it feels good to get a little exercise and get off my duff.

Oct / Nov / Dec
same reasons

Fall is nice, but the winter months Dec-Feb are awesome. I love working with snow on the frozen ground . The only drawbacks are the lack of daylight or if there is extreme cold (I classify as wind chill below zero).

I like the Fall. The change of seasons gets me motivated, and I continue to work into the bitter cold of January. I finish-up what I need to in the spring, and by summer-time I've had about enough. I just resumed splitting and stacking a huge pile of bucked wood that I didn't have the energy for during the summer.

Around 9:20 am.

I like october best but usually end up cutting in january and febuary due to lack of work at that time of year. I will cut any month if it's not to muddy and I can find extra time.

My favorite time to SAW logs is when I am asleep, wife says I sometimes sound like a chain saw.

My faves are late spring and early fall, partly because the ground is drier, making the lousy access roads to the remote cutting areas easier to navigate.

You have said everything I was going to say. My wife would tell you that I refer to Fall as "The most woderfull time of the year"

I cut in the woods from late fall until things thaw. I split and stack late spring after the ground dries up. I take whatever opportunities come along in the summer, usually storm damage or something from someone's yard. I actually like cutting in the summer, just don't like the bugs in the woods.

We do our cutting during the winter months.

1. Sap is down.
2. Won't disturb any bird nests.
3. No flying insects to disturb us.
4. It is just such a great time to be in the woods.
5. Outdoor exercise that one gets during summer months takes a big downhill in colder months. It is good for the body to get that exercise during the winter months.
6. If one has to skid any logs they side much easier on snow than on mud or any bare ground.
7. If you have help, it is a great time to build a fire from a brush pile. A great place to visit. Super nice to have a lunch by that fire, etc.
8. Like others, October and November are hunting months.

There are some years when we get shut out because of deep snow and we just live with it. (Another reason to have more than a year or two wood supply on hand.) But most years we are able to cut at least until mid January or early February.

We cut during the winter and stack the wood. Come spring and warmer weather then the wood gets split and stacked. Then the wood waits a few years before seeing the flame. It works like a charm for us.

Ihave found October to be the worst month for tics. November tends to be rainy and nasty. Once its cold, I head for the woods. The only down side is short day light. But at my age I can't work too long anyway.

While I have cut wood during every season I prefer this time of year until the snow flies sometime in late-November or early-December . . . I don't hunt and it can get a bit chilly riding the ATV on the trails so this gives me a a good excuse to get outdoors . . . plus . . . no bugs, it is cooler for working and I love the smell of Fall . . . besides it just seems like the "right" time of year to do it.

Winter: I am too busy sledding . . . and with deep snow it can be a challenge getting to and from the tree to drop it and haul it out. My least favorite season to cut wood.

Spring: Too much mud and the bugs are coming out . . . but I will typically cut some wood during this time of year since I want to get out and about . . . and due to the ATV trails being closed for Mud Season there isn't much else to do.

Summer: Summer is a pretty busy time with lots to do -- both for pleasure and for work . . . but I sometimes manage to fit in some cutting . . . although the bugs and heat can be a challenge.

I just processed a face cord yesterday afternoon. It was still too hot here in north central NJ. Shirt was stuck to me.

lol @ 9:20am...

I like to cut in the fall and split in the winter. doesn't mean I don't scrounge all year around, those are just my preferences.
