Do I need a new saw?

Im going to an auction this weekend that has a Stihl 075r listed. That is all it says about the machine. Further research indicates that this is an older saw (1975+) that is about 111cc/ 10,000RPM with about 7hp, decomp valve, and possibly no chain brake. Sounds like it isnt for the faint of heart but I wouldnt mind a big saw for those big jobs. I probably wouldnt run more than a 25" bar on it.

Anyone have any experience with this saw? Anyone know what would be a resonable price to pay in running condition? (I was thinking around $250 max) Anything specifically to watch out for?

if nobody else at the auction knows what it's worth then 250 would be a GREAT deal on one. If there are several people there who know it's value, then probably more like 400+

I'd have to google it, but the "r" designation isn't something I'm aware of.

If you want a saw to pull a 25" bar, then get another saw. the only reason to lug that thing around is for a bigger bar or for a mill.
 
I don't really have any info on the saw, but it seems like massive overkill for a 25" bar. 110+ CC's can run a much larger bar than that. I'm not sure I would want to carry the extra weight. The R would designate a "Rescue" in the normal stihl line up.

It sure would make a nice powerhead for a 32" bar though. ;-)

Yeah, i guess you are right. I didn't think of that. That would have been one heck of a rescue saw, though.

Danno is right. This is a big monster, mainly suited for milling. He's right on the value also if it is in good shape. I'd go to the auction though and grab it if it is in nice shape and you can get it for $250. Nice one for resale, then you could get a more modern lighter saw to run your 25" bar.
 
I like HittinSteel's answer. Try milling with it, if you're into that, then decide to keep it or sell it off. Probably make a few bucks, depending on what YOU pay, of course.
 
If she starts easy enough, I would like to have it also. It is hard to argue against having TOO much power. On thing that may be a draw back is I bet that thing weighs a ton.

Of course you need a new saw!, I'd research parts availability on that saw, I'm sure AS would supply good information.
$250 is about the maximum I'd go unless it was in mint condition. I would also consider selling or trading it for something newer in the 80cc range for your 25"- 28" bar.

I'd only consider it for milling.

If you want to run a 25" bar for firewood, any modern 70+cc saw will more than fit the bill with not nearly as much weight, better antivibration, and often much better fuel economy. Heck, even a good 60cc saw can support a 25" bar on the occasional big hardwood.
 
Went to the auction...They had it mis-listed. It was an 015 with a top handle. (the "1" does kind of look like a "7") Needless to say, I didnt even stick around.

That sucks, kinda like going to see an old muscle car and it turns out to be a Yugo.

awww, you should have stayed. I bet you could have gotten a good deal on that little saw!
 
I thought about it but they had left it out overnight in its case wide open. It was sitting in about 6" of water. That kind of worried me. Plus there was a ton of people there. It probably would have brought too much.
