I am wondering. I replaced my oil hot air furnace two years ago with a high efficiency gas furnace, that vents directly outside via a combined PVC exhaust/OAK.
I had the old flue for the oil furnace relined with SS flex a few years prior to that. It is now unused and capped off in the basement.

Since nothing else is venting into it, could it be reused for a pellet stove?
Would it be safe?
Would it meet code or fail to meet code anywhere?

Even if all of the above is OK: Is it a good idea?

Edit: Oops, wrong forum.

edit2: Dang mods are fast, they moved it while I was posting my first 'Edit'!

Must be those new high efficiency mods.

You can use it, either as a vessel to hold a pellet liner running all the way up to the cap,
or as a continuation of a short section (direct connect) inserted part way up.
It'll probably work fine with the direct connect, but cleaning will require disassembly.
A full liner may allow for complete brushing from the top.
You'll hafta seal/insulate between the two where the smaller enters to keep the draft correct.

I am not sure I understand. The existing liner is a 6 inch stainless steel liner in a clay-tile flue, fully lined top to bottom.
There is a short horizontal section through the basement wall to the chimney, where it connects using a 90 degree connector to the vertical section, which is maybe 20 feet high or so.

So the whole thing is already 6 inch stainless steel.

Are you saying I would need to run a new liner inside the 6 inch liner?
I see that most pellet stoves seem to require 3-4 inch pipe for the exhaust, so that may be an option, though getting through that 90 degree connector might be difficult.

Or could I use an adapter to connect the 3 inch pipe from the stove to the end of the 6 inch that protrudes from the wall?

This is not a finished basement so aesthetics are not important.

plug right into the existing ss liner. It'll work fine.

Cool. I know what I am doing as soon as the Jotul insert is broken in.

Now I just need to research which stove is the most reliable and least maintenance. Heck, in the basement, it doesn't even need a window.
